Heli-coil motor mount question...

I hear alot of conflicting stories... is heli-coiling the way to go or should I just re-tap and use a bigger bolt? Some people say the heli-coils will be way stronger... and then some say just re-tap cause the HC's are weaker.

I run a SI cage so i don't think i can fit anything larger or longer than the bolts that are already in there... that's why i'm thinkin heli-coils.

On an f4i... can it be done just as easy w/out dropping the motor? Or do you have to drop it to get the job done right?

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

i wish i knew and have actually been wondering the same for awhile. i know @ some point ill my threads out and be ****** pissed!

as far as i can tell by breaking it down in my head, doing the heli coil will give you new threads but will most likely tear out easier

and re tapping it will give new tougher threads but will weaken the housing in which the threads ly.

im interested to see what somebody whom has done this before knows about it

Maybe old man roger?

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

yo have to take the motor out. with a heli coil you drill the hole, tap it, and than install the heli-coil. it lasts, but it is definately not as strong, it works best if you put it in, loctite the coil, and then install the bolt and leave it!! if you R&R the bolt, chances are the heli-coil will come out as well.

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

So I'm doin this tomorrow as I've got my motor lying on the floor while my parts are at powdercoat...

Anybody know the thread pitch of the MM bolts?? I know it's either an M10 x 1.25 or an M10 x 1.5

Just figured I'd ask here b4 stoppin at Lowes to match threads. Thanks

Whatever you do, do NOT nut and bolt that ****!

what a pain in the ******* ***... Gotta remove the gas tank everytime you want to take your cage off (makes a simple cage/plastic removal, a BITCH)

I got my bike nut/bolted, and I'll never do it again.. That was ******* a stupid move, wish I never took the advice that was given to me!

Yep... I figured this once I dropped my engine and saw how much space I was workin with.

So seems the coil is my only other option

Pretty funny too... I've had 0 threads in both sides for this entire past season with 0 problems runnin the SI cage :YEAH

I just put the bolts in there loose to center the cage mount... but at anytime you could just reach down and grab the cage and move it all around.

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

The question asked here is basically doing the same thing to the bike...you have to tap the hole to bigger threads whether you put a bigger thread bolt in or put a helicoil insert in that converts it back to the original size.

My opinion is that the Helicoil is the better alternative since the Helicoil itself is a very dense metal that will hold up better than the aluminum to removal and reinsertion of the dense steel bolt.

Yes I already know this.... There's no question that heli-coils are the way to go.

With the combo of the sharp stainless steel outside threads pushing into the aluminum and pressure from the bolt itself... the coil is not going anywhere.

All I need to know at this point is the thread pitch! 1.25 or 1.0

Thanks buddy... I'm pretty sure that they're a 1.25 too... gonna stop by the hardware store on the way to pick up the heli-coils tomorrow, just to be sure.

Excuse me... I meant 1.25 or 1.5 (cause that's what they have at the auto parts store)

But as said... pretty sure I remember them being 1.25

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

Also, go to an auto parts store, and get the heli-coil kit, comes with the drill bit, tap, 10 or so helicoils, and the coil driver, unless you have that laying around (although you probably do, with the shop i've seen in pics), but the kit makes it easy.

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

Both of my mounts are helicoiled, haven't had a problem since. Might want to go ahead and do both mounts while you're at it.

Edit: And yea, m10 x 1.25

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

fyi-just remember to knock the tab off the helicoil after installation and before you insert the bolt. i forgot one time and the tab fucked the bolt up pretty good.

also, unless you plan on dropin the motor to coil the motor mounts, you will also have to run the tap through the frame mount(making it a little larger).

Re: Heli-coil motor mount question...

How did running the FI cage end up jacking up your threads? Just wondering. Oh and I get the great pleasure of doing this project too. LOL.
