Re: 79 z problems

Might be a spark issue. Are you sure the carbs you are using are in working order? Or do they work on another bike at least? My bike would still run even though the carb needed to be rebuilt bad.

cool i really think it is ign. problems i have the timing set right, but i am not sure what you mean by point timing? as for the plug color it dose not run long enough to get a good reading i am going to pull the fly wheel at work tuesday and clean it really good and see if that helps .
brake cleaner wont hurt it, right?

OHH man points....
Best advice, let a trained professional set them for you. IF you set them wrong or they are goofed up, the bike WILL not run no matter how bad you want it to. Thank goodness for CDI...

Re: 79 z problems

contact cleaner is fine justin
points are easy
not as easy as cdi heheheheh
set your gap first .0013 (business card thickness if you dont have a feeler gauge) then set the point to open at the f mark
did you check the cam timing while you were looking
an old cam chain will give you the same symptoms of bad timing check and see where it is at and see how much slop it has

Re: 79 z problems

you might need new points because mine did what yours did a couple times (starts and runs for 5 seconds then die)before the spark finally disappeared. also if your points havent been replaced in a long long time it might be a good idea to replace those.

also points gap is easy to set just turn the flywheel a little past the F mark to where the points are open the most, and this is where you wanna take the gap measurement from.

oh yeah, use a feeler gauge like fab said, i don't believe a business card is too accurate

Re: 79 z problems

yep my bad fab
.013 which is the same thickness as a business card, but feeler gauges are cheap at the local car parts store i would recommend buying one if you have points and you need them to adjust your valves too so a handy lil tool to have
more than likely justin if the points are right the condensor is bad
that will cause an irradict spark and do like you say its doing
bring it by if you dont get it figured out
