Re: clutchless shifting

I do it every now and then when cruisin down highway or whatever 1 handed relaxin. never had grindin or any other tranny problems resulting from it. i Wouldnt do it at very high rpms or anything just use common sense.

Re: clutchless shifting

I don't do it much, only if I think I might be in 5th gear (and it's usually in 6th cause it doesn't budge) so I give it a tug instead of pulling in the clutch cause then it wears the clutch out getting it back into 6th gear.

Re: clutchless shifting

it won't do any damage if you are doing it correctly. If you blip the throttle, it will slip into gear and be smoother than with the clutch, if you are on the gas when you shift, it wears on the shift forks and will eventually cause damage.

Re: clutchless shifting

Yeah if you just put light up-pressure on the shift it goes like butter when its at a high enough rpm. at least on mine. I've tried clutchless down shifting but it sounds too clunky and rough.

Re: clutchless shifting

according to the sept. 2004 issue of sport rider in the riding skills part they sayit's fine to do. heres what they say; "using the clutch for upshifts during aggressive canyon or track riding is totally unneccassary. in fact there are many riding situations where it can be a nuisance and even a hindrance to quicker and smoother riding." :YEAH

Re: clutchless shifting

I agree it's less smooth with the clutch, but I've heard horror stories about it causing false neutrals and coming out of gear with acceleration etc. I will continue to use the clutch mostly, but for 4/5/6 I won't bother anymore. It becomes a hassle after a while to pull the clutch in every 2 seconds while riding on the street.

Re: clutchless shifting

Yup, I do it all the time, and I have put over 70,000 miles on one bike which I only use the clutch for pulling off from a dead stop. When done correctly you'll be fine. On my CBR I have to be careful on a hard take off as the bike will pop back out of gear if I do it clutchless and don't give it a good solid push into gear, my bmw, kawasaki, and other bikes I have ridden do not seem to have this problem. For anyone who has not learned it, you need too, I broke a clutch cable in Jax. FLA on a sunday afternoon, I rode the 5 hours home with no clutch, what you gonna do if you don't know how to ride it? Thank God I was on a older BMW which will start in gear, otherwise I would have had to jumper the nutral switch.

James.
