98 GSXR 600 Tech Help for a NewB
First does anybody know where there might be a manual online?
If not here are my querstions.
1. My fan is not running I would think its probably a fuse....problem is I dont know where the fuses are on this bike nor do I want to start taking it apart (Plastics)and guessing where it is.
2. I need to change my coolant and water. First how do I drain the system and second what mixture of coolant to water should I use.
3. Oil Needs to be changed. What oil should I use. Ive be told 10-40 and Ive been told 20-50...which is gonna be best for my bike I dont stunt but I will be riding alot. Also should I use synthetic, partial synthetic, or good old fashion crude.
But wait there is more....
4. I need to change my brake fluid...how is this done on a bike. As I said Im a New to bikes so bare with me.
Thanks Bros

okay, the fuse box as you are sittin' on the bike is on the left air duct. there's a little screw that holds it shut. to change the anti-freeze and change the oil you got's to pull the side panels. 50/50 water/anti-freeze mix and go with 20/50 oil if it's got alot of miles or you plan on beatin' on the bike. don't use synthetic, just plain old oil. if you gotta' change the break fluid then bike's prolly been beat, but just siphon the break fluid from the master cylinders, then drain the lines at the calipers. add new fluid and then bleed the lines with the set screws on the calipers.
don't forget to check the torque on your muffler bearings and make sure your dicfur valve is locked in place before you start the bike after all this maintenance....

Hi, well you can get a manual on ebay or amazon cheap like $15-25 bucks i would suggest it if
you are doing your own work to save a buck.
Answer 1:
Your fan comes on at a given temp. about 232+ somewhere around there. How do you know it does not
come on? Is the bike getting that hot? The fuse is in visible site in the left front corner of the
fairing it says the word fuses on it. You can pop the cover and inspect it!
Answer 2:
You can pull the hose on the water pump on the bottom of the motor you will need to remove
the left and right plastic to do so. Because you need to fill it back up with coolant. And not
unless you are a genius there is not a way to fill it without removing the panels. I would suggest
using a 50/50 mix it works best. Your bike take (2.5L=2550cc) of fluid measure it out! You can go to a automotive shop and pick up some PRE-mixed
coolant like PEAK READY it works great i have use it for years. Even on the track!
Answer 3:
Oil change i would use a stock OEM oil filter or a K&N filter DON'T use a FRAM filter it leaves small fiber
**** in your oil. I would suggest using 10-40w Motul 5100 semi-syntec your bike takes (2.8L=2800cc) to fill
with a filter change
Answer 4:
if you are going to bleed the brakes and don't know how then you need to buy a manual. Also the
front and rear brake are seperate which means you need to drain them off refill them and blow the
bubbles out of the line. The easy way is to buy a Actron Vacuum Pump Brake Bleeder Kit and
pressure bleed it if you are going to change the fluid all the time. If not you can use a small
fishtank tube and a clear COKE bottle filled half way with fluid pump the brakes until there are
no bubbles it only takes a couple pumps. then close the valve all done it's easy and quick but
if you don't like a mess buy the KIT!

Answer 5:
Check the fork bearings also they could come loose! And makesure to cover your battery with
a metal blanket like foil it will keep the battery warm and at the right voltage. Also when you
change the oil you can drop some BB's in there also it will help the oil mix into the passages
for better flow. If you don't have BB'S they bake soda will work also about 5 teaspoons will do the
trick! If you want the brakes to stop better you sand the rotors with some really heavy-duty
sand paper for about an hour that should get you to stop faster!
Just kidding disregard ANSWER 5!
Peace
