Honing takes any small scratches out of the cylinder wall. Be carefull some bikes have a special coating on the cylinder walls. Be sure to check if yours does before you go honing or boring your cylinder.

if the cylinder is nikasil plated you arent supposed to hone it, but you still should remove the glaze on the cylinder by lightly sanding it with a 1000 grit sandpaper or else the bike will most likely foul plugs when you ride it hard

nikasil

if you want to get rid of the nikasil you can get a cast iron sleeve nikasil is great for racing cause if you blow it up you sand the cylinder put ur new piston and rings in and your done i've rebuilt all my bikes myself....if you want to go bigger theres companys out there that make cast iron sleeves that can be bored up to 60 over but that displacement doesn't help much ur better off puttin ur money in a port job pipe and rad valve ud be suprised the diffrence that makes
