so far what i'm looking at are a 1994 Chaparral Villain w/ 454...only has 150 hours on it and in beautiful shape...they want 12k for that.
the other one is an 86 wellcraft scarab...454...in really great shape for the year, and that one is going for 7k. i'd like to be some where around 10k or below. I dont need to do 90mph...but i'd like to be able to cruise at 40/45 without problems and take some waves...Lake Champlain can get quite rough at times and it changes quicker than you can imagine.

Those are both really nice boats. Expect a huge fuel bill. My little 3.0L sucks down the fuel pretty hard, I can't imagine a 454. There was a guy with a fountain at the lake that said he spends $1000 for a good weekend's fuel. Of course that was twin 502's but still, open up the wallet. I'm spending $50 for a decent weekend.

what is your boat? i'm thinking i might be better off starting off with something with a smaller motor, but then again how i am id be pulling that out in a couple months and droping in a V8 or something crazy like that. another problem i have is that i'm not sure if i want an open bow or cuddy....open bow would be nice for lounging, but a cuddy would also be nice if i wanna spend a night on the lake or wanna get in out of the sun for a bit.

Mine's a 1995 Glastron SSV175. 17' with 135 HP Mercruiser. It's a bowrider that will fit 7 people comfortably. I had 6 in it tubing on sunday. It's a great smaller lake boat. I'm not sure I'd take it in the ocean much. I had it on the river saturday and it was pretty rough, but the boat handled it like a champ.

I can cruise at 35-40 mph if it's calm. 25-30 with decent chop.

I wanted an open bow because my parents have a cuddy that is of no use for us. We never spend the night on it. They're 23' boat will only hold 5 people and one has to sit backwards. I guess a couple could sit in the cabin but who would want to do that? Mine will seat 7 facing forward and 8 if someone wants to sit backward. It's great for water sports because I can have a couple people sit up front to get it to plane faster. I really like it. My next one will be a 21' bow rider just to have more room.

its a good looking boat...sounds about something that i'd like, but i'm thinking a few feet bigger would be better for our lake, especially if i were to head down twards the burlington area. mind if i ask how much you spent on it?

I stole it at $4200. I looked for about 6 months before I found this one. Most have horrible interiors and they're usually more money. This one, the canvas was shot from the sun but that meant the interior didn't take the beating. I just bought a full cover for $300 and I'm good. I was really trying to avoid a Bayliner because they are very cheaply made. I lucked out finding a Glastron for this kind of money in this shape.

Re: Official..who's gonna finish rebuild first...

yeah thats definately a steal! i was think you were gonna say atleast 8k....i've been keeping my eyes on craigslist and ebay...and just watching around here...one of my friends just found me an 18ft scarab with a 4.3...does 62 on GPS...no cuddy/open bow..but its a cool looking little boat. I'm going to be checking out to see how much the guy wants for it. This boat is mainly going to be for me, my gf and the dog...maybe another couple every once in a while. all my other friends have the larger boats and they can haul everyone around.

My speedo was a little optimistic. It reads about 44 at 40 by gps. Not too bad really.

those 4.8's are definately a good motor...if i were you i'd look into getting a custom tune done on the computer. i got ahold of wait4meperformance.com and for 159.00 i had a complete replacement for my factory computer sent to my door. He goes through and does a special tune to the computer designed to what kind of mods and your driving style. My truck pulls real good from about 20 to 90...he moved my shift points up to about 5800rpms under WOT and also bumped my speed limiter up to something like 220mph....that way there is no chance you'll ever hit it lol...they also have a lifetime of free upgrades for those of us that never leave anything alone. you add a performance part, call him up tell him what you have and he'll send you out a new computer and you send back the other one he sent you. There are some other companies that do it also, Nelson performance, Wheatly, PCMs for less...and there is actually a program called EFI live that you can get for your laptop and do your own tuning. These are much more expensive than wait4me though.
