I bought a 1984 Z50R. Its sweet. Fired up and was riding right away... but DANG is that thing SLOW!! Are they all that slow? Or does mine have issues?

Re: OK 1984 Z50 problems....

they have a much lower compression ratio than the modern xr/crf i think it's like 8.5:1 on the Z motor, where as the xr/crf is like 10.5:1. plus their trannies are geared wider than the CRF making it feel even more sluggish

but when they are rapped out in top gear a Z will walk a CRF ( both stock that is)

i have a 1982 z50r and its also slow as **** but mine is been ridden alot so my rings are shot so maybe a fresh hone and a new set a rings will help out alot
and if you are up to it that mill your head or find a thiner head gasket to make a higher compression ratio that will help out alot

Re: OK 1984 Z50 problems....

anyone know how i can figure out what year mine is? originally i thought it was around '75. now im thinking it might be late 60's. im not sure if the gearing is really wider on the z's, mine seems super close. it might just be that it is geared super low, i can start off in 3rd gear no problem. i think i may clock(radar) mine before i rebuild it 88cc. =)
edit: wait... no maybe its not late 60's. i have rear suspension, headlight, taillights, but no turn signals or reflectors. its red with minitrail sticker on the tank.
