Unhappy More news from my bro in Iraq

greetings.
i have been doing fine. last week i was in a skirmish. the convoy that was attacked on the outskirts of tikrit was 82nd airborne and 2nd acr. i was behind the 50cal on a gunship. we were engaged, had brief contact, no american casualties. the only casualties were baathist or saddam loyalists, we arent sure which. after we broke contact the truck infront of mine hit an ied. we were all ok. the soldier in the passenger seat of my hmmv go flash burns on his hand and arm, from the blast. a 3 ft piece of shrapnel missed my beautiful face, my gun mount and ring took the brunt of it. my ring was jammed and i had only 45 degrees of motion untill we reached samarra, on the way out of tikrit. the way back to baghdad was a bit scary, i had an m240b strapped to the roof for me to pull rear security.
im back on the street everyday again, im doing the prisoner transfers to al fallujah every day or two. mp's got us lost yesterday. a routine 1hr trip lasted 7 hrs, driving through an iraqi vilage out in the middle of nowhere, we left the highway to avoid another ied. so we drove on dirt roads for an hour or so, got lost inside a farming village, stuck at a dead end, and almost took out there power supply. (5 tons dont fit everywhere)and found this back road on the outskirts of baghdad, and ended up in the city's main market place, 5000+ iraqis in a 4-500sq ft area, it was scary, everyone just stoped and stared at us, and we didnt have many soldiers or weapons to pull full security, so if there had been opposition, there is little we could have done about the situation. it took quite a while to roll out of there, then we ended up stopping at biap (baghdad international airport) for gas and lunch. the mp's bought us lunch. (there is a burger king trailer from india
there) (its funny seeing hindu's cook and serve beef for human consumption) we then rolled out of there and had to cross 14 july bridge, (we continued to take back roads, to avoid ied contact). the downside to that is your more inclined for an ambush.
we had another rocket attack. and a few minor morters here and there. check point two was demolished. again.... no one was hurt. the food still tastes terrible. but all is well. i will not have too much time next week, we are loosing 4 people for a 12 day convoy to kuiwait. (a unit is leaving to go home). i willhave 4 maybe 5 prisoner transfers this next week. i will check my email as much as possible. looking forward to comming home, i want to forget this place. 3rd world countries are no joke, and hollywood dose good at over glorifying the lesser points, and not showing true reality of combat, war, poverty, and i mean true poverty. none of you would believe what things are like over here. for both us and them. american homeless have a better life than 50% of iraq. however thease people at least try. in the country many houses are made out of mud. yes mud huts, mud and palm tree leaves, so primative, so sad, but a man, his three wives and seven children are all happy. th
e iraqi dream is quite different from the american dream. all they want is to have a job, and have a family. most car not for wealth. if you stay up late, or get up early enough, im on aim whenever i am on my email, cenobiteofnatas is my screen name. i kinda sit there and hope someone will sign on. it gets kinda lonley overhere. the entire sentiment of the camp is kinda down, and so is morale. too many people have been killed, even though its greatly slowed down, there have been too many near misses. and its just bringing everyone down. not to meantion many of thease guys have been here a year already. so 3/4 of the camp is burned out and getting complacent. i believe that is why there are more soldiers arriveing, so that there are people who wont overlook the little details.thank you for all of your morale support, it really helps. im getting kinda hungry, so im going to go and eat an mre now. take care,
love
jason

I just wanna say thanks for sharing that letter! It really makes things hit home a little harder when you hear it from someone other than CNN or some other BS news agency. I wish him and all others fighting/Defending our country all over the world a safe and speedy return home.
