Superhawk a good stunt bike?

Hey guys I have been riding street bikes for about 4 years and I have a 97 VFR750 right now thats in really nice shape. I want to get into doing some stunts, but the VFR isn't the greates bike for it and its really clean so I don't want to drop it.

I love superhawks and I am thinking about buying one to learn stunts with. For those unfamiliar its a 1000cc V-twin, sport bike of course. Really torquey from what I hear. I mostly want to wheelie, but if I get into it who knows how far I'll end up going. So anyone know how superhawks are for stunting?

One more thing, this site kicks ***!

Thanks

Re: Superhawk a good stunt bike?

We have a guy in the group that stunts a superhawk, it has mad torque and good smooth power. He pulls 1,2,3 gear standups all day on it. Only thing im not sure of is the subframe. I think the stock one is weak you might need to get it reinforced.

Re: Superhawk a good stunt bike?

Word, Timebomb,,,word.

I like the Superhawks, as said above they have a great powerband and a bit more torque.

As far as I know here are some goods and bads you might want to consider.

Goods
Looks good
90 degree V-Twin= huge powerband
comfortable enough to go on long trips with.
Insurance is much less than a liter class sportbike
Fast enough to play with the liters and 600s
Sounds intimidating
More upright body position (this makes wheelies easier to learn)
Durable

Bads
V-twins are famous for poor fueling and snatchy throttles and allthough Honda has a great rep for it's twins,,it's still a twin
Not as many options for parts like 12 bars and cages
the front forks are not quite as beefy as a liter bikes (because they are standard not inverted)
will not corner as well as a true sportbike, (this is a good thing and bad thing, it will teach you more about cornering but at the same time it is a nervous bike in hard corners.

I have never owned a superhawk but I have ridden one a couple of times and worked on one once, great bike, comfortable, easy to ride, nice power, not as intimidating as an RC-51, feels kinda small, I would love to have one as a in town bike. kinda vibrates but nothing like a 45 degree V-Twin, it's a really mild vibration almost exactly like an RC-51 at idle. I know a few guys stunt them I remember seeing one in the original Judgement day. I love the way that thing sounds with a set of slip on cans,,,niiice.

Re: Superhawk a good stunt bike?

Hey thanks a lot for the info, it sounds just about right to me for my purposes. I'll have to wait till spring to do much since it'll be snowing here soon, so maybe I can find a deal on one over the winter.
As for the corner handling, do you have any idea how the superhawk would compare to a 97 VFR?

Re: Superhawk a good stunt bike?

Its not fuel injected and because its a twin the position of the carbs will hinder your ability to do slow stuff. Not just 12ve, but slow rolls and no handers etc. Parts are $$$ cause not alot of people stunt 'em. Front end sucks, basically the same front that f4/f4i's use. You guys might notice a growing trend for f4/f4i riders to swap out those chitty fronts for 929/954's.

Survey says, dont buy it for stunting. Get a cheaper F4i/929, roll longer endos & longer no handers, buy cheaper parts when stuff breaks, & be able to get cages & 12ve bars from a wider selection of vendors.

That'll be $19.95, PayPal is excepted. haha j/k. Good Luck.

Re: Superhawk a good stunt bike?

I personally love the superhawk. it had a terrific powerband, it pulled hard just about all the way up to the rev limiter. it is a little heavy, but it still whellied real nice. endos were a little trickier because the front end isn't that great. but it wasn't bad at cornering at all. i liked cornering on my hawk better than on my 929. i only had takslappers once ever on my vtr and that was because i went blazing over some railroad trax. the 929's front end is sloppy as hell without the damper. don't get me wrong, i love my 929 but the vtr is a hot ride. and if you do get it, go with the Micron high mounts, loud as hell.

Re: Superhawk a good stunt bike?

great bike!! front end does suck though. currently trying to find a 929/954 front end for it. wheelies are easy. upright position does make it easier to stunt.

Re: Superhawk a good stunt bike?

Hey thanks for all the info guys! It looks like 98 was the first year that they made the Superhawk, and for my price range the older the better.
Were there any notable changes made in different model years, particularly changes that will make the bike stunt better?

Re: Superhawk a good stunt bike?

I've been trying to learn on a VTR - I'm just doing basic stuff on a stock 98
superchicken, but seems OK to me...
Front is a bit heavy compared to CBR600 or CBR900.

Biggest problem I've seen is that nobody seems to be making cages
& 12-bars for em...

IMHO, superhawk isn't a great track bike with the stock front.
You want a bike that handles great ? Get a GSXR750 or 1K - they are great
stock - even better if you have racetech do the front forks with proper springs and a gold-valve kit...

Interesting story about VFR vs. Superhawk - I was out in Las Vegas ~5yrs ago for a track day at LV International and Honda had just dropped off 1 of every new sportbike in Honda's inventory to none other than Fast Freddie Spencer!!!

Freddie was taking all the bikes out for laps and he seemed to take a real liking to the 1998 VFR.... Damn, he was just kill'n that VFR - he
seemed to really enjoy the big bike! All the other bikes (including the vtr), just a couple laps each by Freddie... Totally changed my opinion of the VFR after seeing him on it! (I was on a race-prepped CBR F2 and let me tell you Freddie was crazy fast on the VFR and I don't think he was trying to hard...)
I'd say thats a "Fast Freddie" Spencer endorement of the VFR if I've ever seen one...
