Re: Custom cage pics

i've never built a cage, but im a decent welder and have fabb'd up quite a few different things. What I would do is get a good look at the bike, and find out how far out from the mounts you want to build it. I would grab some pipe-stock, and weld washers to the ends, then bolt those to the engine mounting points. (they would look like several metal frame sliders). Then working off those points, I would spot in 'cross bars' connecting the 'frame slider looking things. Either cut/weld several pieces, or if you have the equipment, bend up a hoop to connect the two sides. There are several cage manufactuers out there, pick the one you think is best, then copy their ****.
I would actually probly weld up the the cage the best i could ON the bike, because you dont want that **** to heat up and bend so it doesnt line up anymore. Then unbolt it and finish up/clean up the welds

i never thought about welding washers to pipe..... thanks..

how did you get the bolt to hold the pipe?
did you weld a washer on one side?

how thick is the tubing?
did you buy longer bolt or reuse the stock ones?

thanks

Re: Custom cage pics

My "pipes with washers welded to the ends" are actually BMX pegs that I bought at Walmart. $7-10 for two is a pretty good deal IMO.

nice, i totally forgot about those. i was going to use those as sliders, maybe i'll grab a couple pairs and try my hand at cage fabbing. Right now i have CBOrange's extended sliders.

905 actually is connected together. It doesn't go under the bike. It goes through the bike by the headers up front and connects with the other side.

let me know how your custom cage comes along.

Re: Custom cage pics

i'm building one for a hornet 919 at the moment. it's naked so it'll be much easier than a faired bike. it will go through the gap near the headers and oil filter. will mount to the centre stand bracket and existing frame slider mount.

i'm using 33.7mm OD x 2.6mm ERW which is way overkill but that's what i've got lying around and i've already got the dies to bend it. i will use slightly weaker bolts so that they will shear rather than damage the frame mounts. i'll post pics if anyone is interested.
