rivet master links

how can i tell if my did zj rivet master link is on all the way? i dont have a chain tool, so i used a c-clamp. the rivets are sticking out just barely, and when i look at it compared to the links around it, it looks almost totally in line with them. Is it good enough that the rivets are sticking out a little bit, or do they need to be way out? should i just check it often at first, or just give up and spend the money on a chain tool. i might just go buy a clip style master link because i do not want to find out i didnt put it on right by having my chain pop off when i'm riding. Obviously i am new to chain/sprocket stuff, but i want to learn how to do it myself instead of paying someone to do everything.
