I need help with getting myself to use the rear brake (pics...)

K...so I can get my bike up in the air...but I have problems getting myself to go "REAR BRAKE!" instead of "OH ****...NO THROTTLE!" How did you guys get yourselfs to quit cutting the throttle when you started getting the front wheel up?

Re: I need help with getting myself to use the rear brake (pics...)

I turned the idle up to 5000, so I'd have to get it to about 11:00 then the idle would take over. Then I had to learn the brake. I crashed a bunch of times doin it this way, but it made me learn it real quick.

Another trick is to move your right foot forward on the peg, so the peg is right under your heel. This will raise the probability of you hitting the brake in a panic situation.

I know what you are talking about, I've got a 954 and it is almost impossible to cover the rear brake unless I move ALL the way back in the seat during sit-downs.

Im still a really big n00b, but what I've done is just done ***** wheelies (so i dont even have to worry about looping), then I would just stay on the gas, and bring it back down with the rear brake instead of letting off the throttle. I did that several times, and after a while was getting it up, and riding the rear brake. The hard part is finding how your foot feels comfortable.

Lots and lots of work. Eventually you get past the oh **** feeling when its off the ground. Once your used to it coming up you can start to worry about the brake. I did lots of work with my off road toys before I started with the streetbike.... It went quad, ttr, f3. I have no problem with the rear brake now, and when i do get that oh **** feeling its like 2nd nature to use the rear brake.

I still learning but I started on a quad. Start on the grass or dirt and get the feeling of the launch and the balance point along with the back brake. I’m currently typing with a cast on my hand……. I looped my 400ex on a wheelie race at 40 mph. COVER that BRAKE. I did win the race though.

Covering the rear brake means what, exactly?

Rest your foot on it so it's there for you?
Lightly put pressure on it to bring the nose down?
Smash the **** out of it?
Brake throughout the whole manoeuvre?

I hear cover the rear brake a lot. I've never really been sure of what they are trying to get me to do.

P.S. I'd love an XR50 to train on. Not paying $6000aus for it though.

cover the rear brake means to just have your foot right there, just incase you need to use it (ie- looping)

exactly....Cover/hover cover/hover, get it... Cover it. When a cop says to another cop " I got you covered" It doesn't mean I am shooting you partner it means to cover the guy.....Meaning your right there in case he needs you..

It this picture your idea of having the front wheel up or were you much much higher? If you can even slightly see over the bike you are still plenty low.

On a good sit down wheelie I can't see down the road unless I peek around the side of the tank. This will drag me in that direction just a hair so then I switch and peeks around the other side. Or, stand up... now you see again!

You've got to be brutely high, 12:oc'clockish to have to use the back bread to save ya. Just practice setting your foot there when you are on a wheelie so you can find it in an emergency. No offense but your picture is no where NEAR needing rear brakes for anything....
