Tank slapper,WHAT THE????

I was out ridden with some fellas today and we were playin a bit, the dude in front of me was on a GSXR 1000 and he was riding some pretty long wheelies, then during one of the set downs the front end started shaken like crazy, I thought he was done for but he kept it up. He told me it's never done that before and he had that bike for like 2 years and rode lot's of wheelies, he did say he had a new front tire and it could have caused it. Anyone else got any input on this phenominon called a tank slap

i agree with your bud, get a new front tire.

(you can have him get a steering damper for extra safety)

when that happens, just stay on the throttle, and try not to tense up..... just stay loose and stay on the throttle and try to let your body weight control it.... good luck

Thats the thing he's got a new front tire, and all the gixxers from 01 up have a stock steering damper, and if the damper was a problem, wouldn't it happen all the time, I've heard if ya got your wheel cocked when ya land it can cause this too, I don't know, just one of them things i guess

most likely that's what caused his tank slapper, when you land with your front wheel cocked, you're fuked.

Re: Tank slapper,WHAT THE????

I had the same thing happen to me last Yr on my 02 R1, it was a very nasty feeling. I think what happens is you come down with the wheel not completly straight. i know the gixxer comes with a factory damper (cause ive had a 02 1k) but at very high speeds with that factory p.o.s. damper i think it may give out to depending on if the wheel was turned a little. on i had a ohlins on my R1 and it never did it again but i never did a wheelie that fast again either. i was at 147 when i set it down that day, just wanted to show off and be stupid and could have killed myself, it totaly scared the sh*t out of me. i left about 30 ft of s`s with the front tire. and it shook wicked hard. even the back end of my bike was kinda whiping back and forth. im trying to stick with stuff now from 20 - 100 mph, it wont matter how fast the wheelie is if you dont make it out of it. tell him to buy a good damper and keep it straight. i wouldnt be surpised if it dosent have oil running out the damper right now.
