What EXACTLY does changing your gears do?

I'm looking to change my gears...I know it'll make wheelies a LOT easier...but what exactly does it do? I'm having kind of a hard time selling my parents on letting me change them without telling them that I want to do it so that I can stunt it...I got them to let me put an FI cage on my bike, cuz my mom just dropped it when she was trying to move it, and broke my mirror and blinker...so I was like "That wouldn't have happened with an cage" so they gave in...but what am I gunna say about the sprockets? What will they do exactly? Cuz then I can figure out what to tell them...

no offense brother, but it seems like you are inexperienced. the 954 will bite you hard if you dont respect it. learn to ride before you worry about stuntin

No, I know, I respect it, I know how to ride it well, I just don't know my "mechanics" very well. I already told her the top speed will go down...haha...it's all I could think of, I just had a hard time putting the rest of it into words...like, I know what'll happen, but I can't put what I'm thinking into words...AAHH...the best I can compare it to is like the gearing of a Mtn. Bike...right?

Re: What EXACTLY does changing your gears do?

they make the bike wind up faster or slower. say if u went down a tooth in the front you'd loose a little off of top speed but a gain in acceleration and vice versa with going up a tooth. +3 in the rear is equal to -1 in the front and don't go too small up front or the chain will bind

Re: What EXACTLY does changing your gears do?

damn thats cool, i guess my parents prolly would too if they could afford it.

but anyway i just say PRACTICE,if you cant wheelie the 954 stock, a big sprocket will not make you a stunter.you will still be chasing wheelies.cover your brake and find the balance point and work from there. good luck

Re: What EXACTLY does changing your gears do?

Yeah, I know not to go too small in the front, just -1 or -2 at the most...and isn't it like, -1 in the front = +2.6 in the rear? I dunno...same thing.

Re: What EXACTLY does changing your gears do?

...Yeah, I think I'm gunna have to buy the 12 bar on my own...when I'm ready for it...I don't really wanna ride around with a brand new 12 bar bolted to my bike. Once I get up there doing slower stuff, then I'll worry about the 12 bar...but for now...I think I'll be fine without it.

What he said. Practice getting your wheelies up and playing with the balance point. You will not like the new gears if you don't have your BP dialed in.

The only thing I can see getting a sprocket for is giving you more control with the throttle while you are slowing it down. It will help you when your ready for it. Are you rockin slow wheelies yet?

Re: What EXACTLY does changing your gears do?

I missed that...whoops... No, I can wheelie my bike stock...the 954 wheelies itself... I just am getting 2nd and 3rd gear stand ups down, and am getting ready to ride them out...I don't know how soon I will install the sprockets, but while I'm thinkin' about it I want to get it out of the way. I want the sprockets so that I can learn slower **** easier. Am I wrong? I mean, I still have a long ways to go, I know that...but I was just thinking that before I get too used to wheelying my bike stock...I might wanna just change the sprockets now so that I don't have to go through TOO much pain getting used to wheelying it with a different feel.

Re: What EXACTLY does changing your gears do?

I know exactly what u mean by learnin it one way(stock)..then haveing to go threw all that time to get used to the new way(changed sprockets)..but i really kno nothing about stunting yet ..especially on that bike..i keep my knowledge on my bine alone..so i can get the feel in everyway possible and handle it well..you will to in time..if you change up ur gears..thats ur choice..it will still wheelie..it just depends how high YOU make it go. stay safe tho man..and read up on all the stuntin sh*t on this site..not just this room..they'll help u in here..but other little infro from other parts are helpful as well~Brandon
