Is it possible to never use the clutch method for wheelies?

I admit, I'm not a full blown stunter, just a normal rider who just loves trying wheelies from time to time. I want to try and not abuse my bike as much as possible duriing the little stunting I do....so I never tried clutching wheelies. All I have down pretty good is powering on/off/on 1st gear sit downs. I want to move up to 2nd gear stand ups but would still like to use the power on/off/on method. I really don't want to screw up my clutch. Could someone give a detailed step by step breakdown of a 2nd gear standup not using the clutch up method on my 02 R6?

I've been clutchin' up my 02 Gixxer in first and second for over a year and a half and the clutch is still in tact. I've even jammed the crap out of it in third on the freeway a bunch of times and it still works perfectly.

Where in norcal are you at? Im in vacaville...There are some threads about bouncing up a wheelie. Maybe you can try that. But it seems mostly everyone on here prefers clutching.

I'm in the San Jose area.

I have a hard time believing that clutching up a wheelie won't screw up your clutch very pre-maturely. Anyone else have input on this?

Just use the bounce it up method then. I have an R6 as well, and it bounces up very easily, gotta learn how to do it right though. There are abunch of threads on here that go into detail about the bounce it up method, just do a search.

Just clutch it. It's not that hard on clutches. They still last a long time. If you are bouncing a 600 up, you are probably reving the **** out of you. I don't know about you, but I would rather replace clutch plates than an engine. IMO, clutching is much safer as well.

i can bounce up w/out high revving on a 600, its jetted w/ full exhuast, but that only does so much. Might as well learn to clutch it too man, learn both ways

You don't have to use the clutch. I only clutch up 12's and stuff, the rest I just mess with the throttle and bounce. Do you what you want to, and what you feel comforatble doing.

Re: Is it possible to never use the clutch method for wheelies?

i've been clutching every wheelie i've done and i have 11k miles on my current clutch and i'll go out just about every day and practice 1-2 hours so just do the math on how many wheelies i clutch up. its not gonna hurt your clutch very bad expecially if you are a rider that just wants to wheelie from time to time.

No kidding, I would think that using engine engine compression and bouncing hard on the shocks would do a lot more damage than just revving the motor and dropping the clutch.

Re: Is it possible to never use the clutch method for wheelies?

I've grenaded a clutch, clutching up 2nd gear wheelies... so whoever says it's impossible to ruin a clutch clutching it is lying !

I know from experience that you CAN trash a clutch... Doesn't mean it's going to happen to everyone, mine was probably a combination of a few things, maybe even the previous owner...

But I always clutch up, it's definatley more consistant, I can bounce up and roll slow wheelies too, but it just takes a different technique...

whatever works for you and feels the most comfortable
