('newbie') Wheelies on a RD350 (RZ350)

I've been inexpertly messing about with wheelies on and off for a while.
Was starting to get alright (by my standards) on the zx6 I had last year, living in the UK I don't get that much chance to practice. I had an 'incident', which seemed to be me knocking the bike into 2nd unintentionally and ended up with me rolling on the tarmac at 60mph ish. Got fairly bad concussion and took it easy for a while. Got a zx9 after that, but it was an ex-race bike, that had had half it's subframe cut off, so I was a little worried about repeating my previous experience, but having the bike on top
of me this time.

Anyway... I've now got me a slightly knackered RD350 (model RZ350 in the US) for getting around and messing about on.
Been getting back into trying wheelies again. I've been clutching them up in first (the bike's a little down on power and needs a few things sorting).
I've been getting to the point that I'm /just/ getting into the balance point. Quite a bit of the time I seem to go slightly past it, then promptly get scared and put it down again.
Any particular technique or tips to avoid this?... or is it just getting used to it. I've been trying to make myself use the rear brake, but it never quite seems to work like that.

The other problem I've been having is that it seems to be fairly unstable when up, swaing to either side... I suspect this maybe something to do with the 110/80 rear tyre and the slow speeds. Anything I can do about this, apart from sticking a spare zx9 wheel and engine in it :P?

Old yamaha 350 2 stroke sports bike (though mine has no fairings and mx bars).
I've got a 'YPVS' from 91, but they were around in the early 80s in various forms. Was the affordable nutter tool of the early 90s in the UK.

I believe a version of the engine is beng used in some models of the banshee quad.

Listed as 55hp and 160kg, though mine probably has less of both.

I paid £600 ($900) so I aint complaining

<bump>

Just in case anyone has any ideas and missed it first time around....

Also, a quick question on rear brake control...
I've still not got used to using the rear brake, any tips/techniques on how to /make/ myself use it. Apart from the incident mentioned above I've usually been fine just shutting the throttle off, but I'd rather it be second nature that I tap the rear brake.
