Do that. But also buy a cheap tail light off eBay.
You can hack it up (carefully) to accommodate your round bar like I did. Looks clean as.

Also make sure you run two LED strips as you will want one for your brake light and one for your tail. I'd reccomend running a 2:1 (brake:tail)ratio of LEDs. That way your brake will be obvious in comparison to your tail.

I run a small trailer light with one 1157 bulb for tail and Brake but also this

For $40 you get a strip with 25 LEDs.
The 15 in the middle are For Brake and tail/running
5 on each side for turn signals
5 wires. Ground, Tail, Brake, L turn, R turn
