2nd Gear Wheelie Throttle question.
2nd Gear Wheelie Throttle question.
Hey guys. I've been practicing my 2nd gear clutch wheelies like mad on my 02 Honda CBR 954rr. I just can't seem to do it reliably. Im trying to figure out if its my clutching timing that im having problems with or my throttle control. I need input from someone else who rides the same bike as me.
Im at about 5000 rpm going 40-45 in 2nd gear when in one quick motion I blip the clutch in and whack the throttle down and immediately let the clutch back out in one smooth motion. The bike jumps forwards and the front wheels pops up about 6-12 inches off the ground on a regular basis. About 5 times I have got it to actually lift up off the ground and start to climb up there in height.
my question is HOW MUCH THROTTLE do i give it? Im thinking maybe Im just not giving it enough. Do I have to open it wide open? Like do I have to grab higher? on the throttle so Im able to yank it down further? "How wide are you opening the throttle on LITER BIKES?"
Please help. Thanks guys. Just wanted to ask about the throttle before I tried opening it up any more than I already do since I almost looped my bike clutching a 1st gear wheelie the other weekend(stupid)

You shouldnt have to clutch it up in 1st
1) The chances of looping are way higher in first than in second
2) You should be able to clutch it up in second going 15-20 mph
I ride a 600 and it comes up easy in second going that slow. you may just have to whack the throttle open harder.
On your 954, just start low with the throttle and keep going up until you get the desired result.

2nd gear wheelies
when you are clutching it second try tuggin upwards on the bars when you drop the clutch. if that doesnt work just give it more rpm's you can always let off!!!!! cover the rear brake!
I garrentee I know your problem. When i first leaned how to clutch up in 2nd i found out that i had to be droping the clutch slightly after i started to open the throttle,it all happens in a split second. I always thought ( dump the clutch nail the f***ing gas ) at the same time .Several of my friends had the exact same problem and this advise has worked 100% so far. It's all in the timeing.

Look around at other posts about wheelie probs.
I think you will find most good advice is always the same, really doesnt matter what kind of bike (well not really)
Its a matter of practice, practice, practice.
Lern your bike. and learn the timing. In second gear at 40-50 (on your bike) you should have no prob. yankin it up WITHOUT the clutch.
Its just a matter of doing it over and over again and failing over and over again.
Eventually you will get used to the timing of compressing the susp. and on the way up, roll on the throttle. If you want to try slow ish too then yeah, add the clutch Sorry, know this sucks because its not really steps to make it work but its the best advice I've ever got. PRACTICE
Never ridden a 954 but on a 929, come up in 2nd like butta (no clutch)

Each bike will be different. each time you try , just hold the cluch in a little longer while giving more throttle. You will see that the bike will come up more & more as you hold the clutch in longer . do this until you find where your point is at .. there will be a point where you will be comfortable at . First gear should come right up . 2nd will need some throttle,, & 3rd will need more throttle. good luck & be safe ~Turbo~
