Idle settings for 12s and slow wheelies.

I had a really fun day yesterday clutching up standups. I am clutching them up in 1st from 1-2 mph almost a dead stop. Anyways, I am ready to start putting it down on the bar. I have been practicing and am confident I can put it on the bar evenly at around 20 mph and I have 2 questions. Should I just go for it and bump the idle to around 4-5K rpms and quit trying to use the throttle once I get them up there? Cause I can ride them out a little but not much more than a block or so without picking up speed because its so twitchy. Second question is, once I put it down on the bar and I am sliding, do I pull in the clutch (I will have the idle turned up) or let it roll and bump the brake to bring it down. I dont wanna crash from making a dumb mistake.. hehe.

well.. nevermind. I am never saying I am confident about anything again haha. I set it down on the bar crooked last night and wadded my bike up a tad. Busted the top subframe tabs off of the frame, tweaked the subframe, bent both rims, busted the clutch perch, completely wasted the upper, headlight, fairing stay and cracked my gauges, and broke the front brake reservoir. Everything was fine and I was about an inch away from setting it down on the bar nice and smooth and I hit a messed up spot in the road which made me wobble a bit as I was trying to set it on the bar and it hit on the edge of the bar and sent my bike barrell rolling down the street into a curb. Stuntin is a bitch sometimes, but I am hoping to be rolling by next weekend.

However I did get to play around with the idle a bit before I balled up and it helps alot. I cant wait to get back on and practice some more.

i've been putting mine on 3k rpms and that's how i just learned them. It made a huge difference when i started moving my idle up. So much easier cause that's one less thing to worry about once you're up and it's also smoother than trying to hold the throttle with your hand.

okay but what if your not on the rear brake ..... would it have enough engine braking to pull it back down on two wheels? or do i gotta make sure i have the rear brakes held down.... im bringing my wheelies up by powering them at 5-10mph w/ left leg on rear peg and right leg on rear brake but i find myself playing w/ the throttle instead of the rear brake so im gainin alot of speed doing so.

I am no 12 expert by far but I know what you are talking about. I am clutching them up in 1st and it took me a while just to begin to train myself to use the rear brake to control the wheelie instead of the throttle. I was trying to just clutch it up and hold the gas steady and try to use the back brake but I couldnt do it for anything so then I bumped up the idle which helped alot but I still had a few issues with the throttle. I am making small amounts of progress but its coming at a great expense now that I have wadded my bike up. lol. As far as bringing it back with engine braking, I dunno. I am at pretty low rpms while I am up there and engine braking at low rpms isnt near as good as it is at higher rpms so I wanna say I dont think so after a certain point. You know, that twelvy tail is about to hit the ground falling backwards wobbly point.. I will say however, that this weekend when my bike is backtogether and I am out practicing that I will not try to keep going for ***** and giggles if my speed increases over 25 or 30 mph. For sure. hitting the bar crooked going that fast is not good news.

idle

It might be differnet on a 600 but I crank my idle up to 4,000 for all my 12's.....and 4,500 for no throttle handers sittin or standin. It might be different for other bikes but mine wont seem to stay at 12 with less than 3,000 RPM

I will give 4500 a try this weekend. One more dumb question, when running that high of an idle, do you use the throttle at all after clutching it up? or just hold the throttle closed and use the brake only?

throttle

Its pretty much all brake (thats why I like using a really high idle). Every once and a while you will need to goose the throttle just to keep the front end from falling down but for the ost part you can do no throttles all day long
