2nd Gear Wheelies on an R1
2nd Gear Wheelies on an R1
I picked up a 02 R1 about 2 months ago. 4000 miles, engines broke in, already replaced the front end from a rolling endo at 60, and am feeling absolutely comfortable with first gear wheelies.
Still having trouble getting it up in 2nd. Anyone have an 02-03, what are you clutching it at or hitting the throtle at?
Thanks

there are a couple ways to do it. i don't clutch when i can avoid it.. so i wouldnt reccomend clutching 2nd on the R1 when you can power it up and ride it forever.
either chop the throttle.. get going about 5krpm in 2nd (45-50mph) and go WOT (wide open throttle).. when the tach his 7-8k, close the throttle all the way, and immediately reopen it.. the front end will come up. this may take 10-20 tries for you to get the timing down.
bounce method is what i usually use. standup into a "crouch" (*** off the seat by maybe 5-10") around 5-6krpm on the tach in 2nd, bounce all your weight on the pegs, and at the same time as you come down with your weight, open the throttle WOT or 3/4 WOT. the front end will come up. this will take some practice too, and if you are not used to doing standups it will take even more practice to get used to judging the height of the wheelie.. but once you get used to standups, you'll never do long sitdowns again.
lemme know if you need more advice or help.

I just picked up a 2001 R1. My first big bike. I normally ride an R6.
Does all this apply to an 01 R1 also? How should I start off doing wheelies on the R1? What should I expect? Remember, I come from a 600cc bike. Is the change really that drastic? Any feed back here fellas is appreciated

Adamgeek is right on I have an 01 R1 up two in the rear and I bounce 2, 3 and 4th. It is just practice. Plus when you stand you can see were you are going. start small and try not to slam the front wheel down. I would recommend starting in 2nd. Just like adamgeek says bounce on the pegs and when the front forks rebound concentrate on rolling under the rebound. Practice and you'll have it. wear your helmet.
i think that 1st gear is the best to start with on the R1, because the only variable you have to deal with is learning the balance point.. as long as you are cautious, 1st gear will teach you throttle control the best, and you won't have to worry about "how to get it up".. since it will power wheelie anywhere above 4krpm.
just be cautious, and work on popping the front up with throttle blips, and then trying to get it to come up slower and slower untill you can get it to rise right where you want it and keep it there. cover the brake, go slowly, and you'll be fine. once you learn first, move to second and you'll be a pro in no time.
r6_kidd.. there is a major power difference between the R1 and a 600 though, so go slowly.. better to try it 5 times and be safe than to just rip the throttle wide open time #1 and loop the ****er haha.
ripper.. you're from seattle? who do you ride with?

As been said before, I agree! I have a '03 R1 and in 1st she will roll-on up very very easily at 4500-5000 for me. 2nd's powerband sits right around around 7-8 grand and it will roll-on with just a little bit of a tug and/or bounce.

I have a 98 R1 and I was doin 2nd gears easily, the funny thing is that the bike is canadian and my cluster is in kilometers so I knew when I was at 100 kph it would come right up, I would accelerate after I decelerated, kind of in one fast motion, exactly like adam said, and it just floats right up, I practiced first gear sitdowns before just because they came up effortlessly so at least I knew what it was like to ride a wheelie at 30 mph or so instead of 60, that way when I did finally learn 2nd gears I already knew how to hold it, hey adamgeek you were in the stunt competition at Pacific Raceways right? its me Pink! wassup

oh yah and what I meant by 'was' doin 2nd gears easily was that the bike was stock geared, now I have a huge 54 in the rear and stock in the front so Im doin third gears the same way I was doin 2nd
Hey Adam,
Thanks! I've been practicing 1st gears; I can ride them out till I wind out of gear, and occasionally find my balance point. Almost always think I am going to loop though and bounce around a bit while its up there. I am just going to keep practicing finding my balance point in first. Still, was nice to be able to get it up in 2nd, even managed in 3rd with a helluva bounce and wot. Appreciate your help.

daniel.. if you're doing sitdowns in 1st, the balance point will be high enough that you shouldnt be able to see over the top of the bike. i am 6'2" and i can't see over the top in a balanced wheelie unless i standup a bit (which is why i dont do balanced sitdowns much.. because it's a pain to try and look around the side of the bike).
if you bring the bike up so it's high enough you can just barely see over the top, you should be able to ride that out for a while.
also, make sure to be smooth with the throttle. the higher the wheelie, the less forward inertia you have, and the more likely the bike is to be acted upon by side to side forces (i.e wobbling). if you are unstable with the throttle (jerking it open and closed a bunch) near the balance point, the bike will wobble and you wont be able to ride it out for very long. if you want to ride them high as hell in first, work on locking the throttle in place and using rear brake.
goodluck!
