f4i fuel pump no prime...

Ok heres the problem. fuel pump wont prime. I can get it to prime by jumping 2 wires in the pod that goes to the headlight harness. But doing this is wrong and only by luck, the paper clip instantly gets red hot. i cant remember what the colors are of the two wires i am jumping, i will have to go back and look again, but I just wanted some suggestions on things to check.. thanks

Tip over sensor? Kill switch?

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

i did the search and found a ton of threads on this problem. tip over is fine, clutch fine. tested all relays. Nobody seem to come back and say what worked for them.

well basically any electrical problem on an f4i will result in the fuel pump not priming. most f4i owners will have this problem in their lifetimes, all for different reasons. here are a few that have happened to me:
little red wire that comes off the battery (not the thick one) came unplugged
pink wire ripped out of the plug to the ecu (seen that on 3 diff bikes)
wire ripped out of the plug in one of the relays in the tail section
main harness ground broke right at the frame
loose battery terminal
right side controls plugged into the wrong plug
bad connection on the tos jumper

go get to work. get out a volt meter and go through the fuel pump circuits

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

after reading about 10000000 threads on this, I have checked and tested everything. It came to the ignition, the pink wire on the ignition is volting about 12.something.. I saw where wheeliest had posted something about it needing to be 7ish. In the service manual there is nothing about this, and it seems to not mention the pink wire. So I am assuming that this is the problem. Now what can I do, i would like to not buy a new ignition. Can I put some type of inline resistor in,, or what?

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

Hey im having the same issue, I bought an 02 F4i the Fuel pump wont prime, and the wiring is jacked up, but I cant find a schematic that matches the main harness. Back by the ECU there is a plug with a brown and green wire (same colors on fuel pump) but nowhere to plug them!!! Am I missing something? Also I have no front harness, and no BAS, so how do I bypass that is it Red/white to Green or what? Also I have no spark!!! but im not worried about starting a fire when I have no fuel Any ideas would be Super helpful

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

As far as your pink wire goes... I have heard it needs 9 volts, and I have heard of people getting it to work with 3.7 V zener diodes, in paralel with a 1kolm Resistor, I have been looking into the same thing with my bike. I tried a 9 volt battery positve to pink - to ground, no good, I tried building that simple circuit, no good. I would definately try ruling out other problems before messing with that, because nobody seems to have a clear solution for that

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

the wires by the ecu, with the plug dont worry about those, there for the scan tool for diagnostics. if the colors match something on a harness doesnt meen they are the same, they tend to change up in the harness.

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

yeah my pink is pushing over 12, so that is leading me to thinking it has to do with that theft stop thing. I have rulled out everything else i believe, in all the threads no one came up with a solid answer. but, i think if i get this down to 7volts i will be good. I tested another f4i that is in our shop, and it read 7.89 so mine is way over.

Ok so im new and dont really know how electronics work, but when do you need that anti theft stuff with the pink wire? It might be my issue too, but I mean I have keys, and all the ignition wires just no gauges... does that mean I need to check it out?

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

im not exactly sure how it works either, it is not mentioned any where in the service manual. but it has something, that if you put straigt 12volts to it, it goes bad, like when you hot wire it, i belive that it can happen just from something backfeeding. just turn the key to on, and put a voltmeter on the pink and see what you get.

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

Try to see if you can get another switch -- I've had 2 of them go out because of that little resistor on the bottom. Pop that little plastic part off the bottom and you'll see the resistor. BTW, did that fuel line work out for you?

If you were closer, I'd let you borrow my switch and see if it would work.

yeah fuel line worked great, im deffinitly buying you some beers next time i see you

i put on a 929 ignition just a second ago, and it worked so that is my problem, i need to find the bit set to take that bottum piece off of mine, is it a resitor i can buy at radio shack or is it the factory part i need to get?

I think you can buy the resistor at radio shack, but I ended up just buying a new switch both times.

As for the bottom plastic piece... I just stuck a flathead screwdriver in there and broke it off. It's just a plastic cover on the bottom of the switch. I don't even see how it would get wet in a downpour, so I didn't really worry about it.

Re: f4i fuel pump no prime...

I just got my bike up and running! The fuel pump wouldnt prime, and it was that stupid Pink wire! I have heard a lot of ways to bypass that, but they are all confusing, so i wanted to tell everyone what worked for me!
Under the cap in the ignition switch you will find 4 wires, and a 3.9 volt Zener diode. Well I didnt find any 3.9's at Radio Shack... those punks! so I got a 5.1V zener, the black side goes towards the pink wire, put it in the same way the other one came out... but I still had no luck. I read something about a 1kom resistor... sodered that thing on the tabs along with my diode, turned the key and the fuel pump primed right up. So I dont know if that helps, but if anyone has Questions about the stupid pink wire... PM me I will try to help
