tape or wire when repacking the exhuast

Just chopped my exhaust and wanted to know what was easier to repack with. The shop i went to said they were out of muffler tape and to use wire. whats some other ways that have been used without a fire happening?

Don't laugh, but ive used insulation tape.... It holds well untill you pull it apart again. I was using it on fibreglass blanket instead of just the fibre. Had it on a bike for 20000kms!! But I'd probaly use lock wire or something before using that again. It melted through in a few places, but nothing dangerous.
