1000rr steering stem moving on braking?

Installed 1000rr front end on my F4I.... I have checked the bearings placement 3 times? But for some reason when apply any breaking pressure on the front end... I can see the steering stem move just a little and I can feel it?

Re: 1000rr steering stem moving on braking?

bearing adjustment nut... 18ft/lbs

Steering stem nut (the one on top of the triple) 76ft/lbs.

One or the other is loose... the adjustment nut does NOT need to be "super tight".... so try the top stem nut first.

Re: 1000rr steering stem moving on braking?

Is it possible I could be running the wrong bearings? I should be running the f4i bearings correct? or does it matter?

1000rr bearings are exactly the same as the f4i bearings... 929's are the same as well.

The only ones that were different were the early 02's that had tapered roller bearings.

If your's are round then they're good.

Re: 1000rr steering stem moving on braking?

First off what bearing races are you using in the frame? 1000RR/929/954 have tapered bearings and f4i's have ball bearings. Can't mix and match bearings/races. Including the ones in the frame.

If that is ok, check the bearing nuts. They have to be installed with a spanner wrench or tapped with a screw driver. The nut that installs on top of the top triple doesn't do much to hold the bearings snug. Basically the bearing nuts (spanner wrench) should be tight, but not so tight that they make turning the front end difficult.

If all of that checks out the lower bearing race is moving in the frame and you are pretty much fucked. The hole in the frame is ovaled out. JB weld the race in place and hope for the best.

Re: 1000rr steering stem moving on braking?

I've HEARD from cruiser guys, that honda ball bearings are JUNK, and cause play in the stem from the factory..

Many people with gold wings, complain about the ball bearsings causing play..

I recently upgraded my friends F4i to tapered bearing setup from HAI (all *****) and it is SICK..

His had a ton of play in it, and if you tightened his **** up, it just made it hard to turn, his bearings were SHOT..

With this new all ***** setup, its soooo super smooth. No play, just perfect..

Gonna pick one up for my bike soon :YEAH :YEAH

most the time well.. 99% of the time people install front ends incorrectly.. u may be tighting the spanner nut under the top bridge just fine but since the front end is at a rake the weight of the forks will force the stem slightly crooked and cause an alignment promblem while tighting the spanner, simply have one of your friends lift up on the lower fork legs and have them push and pull on them while u tighten that spanner nut to 18lbs or while u hammer it tight with a screw driver to were it starts to cause the steering to be a little heavy.

If your steering stem is loose while u ride, do not ride it or you will have a deathly expierence with tank slappers.

Only the early run 02' 954's had the tapered roller bearings.

I know this for fact... I've had just about every honda front end... including the 02' 954. All year 929's and 1000rr's have ball bearings... same as f4i.

If this guy had tapered roller races then he'd know it instantly while assembling the front end...

+1

This is why you should install the steering stem w/ the forks out of the triples, and the bike hung by the frame from straps.
