rear wheel locked

i was comin home from my buddies house tonight, maybe 2 miles, rode a few mid-rev combos. (bike was cold, so it bogged out a few time)

get to my apartment driveway, pop it into neutral and turn off the engine(so i don't bother the neighbors) i always do the same thing, this time, i didn't make it to my parking spot, my bike stopped before i got there..i started pushin it but i would hardly move, pulled into the clutch, no difference, changed gears, and back into neutral, nothing, felt the rear rotor, semi-hot, "normal".

took it for a spin around the complex, maybe a 100ft, and it would stall on idle. parked it again, rotor=super hot, and the brake pedal is super hard. (lot of pressure)

so i'm 99.9% sure that its the rear brake not letting go, what should i do? just re-bleed? or is there an easier way?

p.s. the other 0.01% goes to the fact that i changed my clutch 2 days ago, can that have anything to do with it?

Re: rear wheel locked

have you added break fluid lately or changed your pads ?

i ask because if you over fill the brake fuid it can build pressure when it gets hot ......

there is a full line on the res do not fill it higher then the full line

if it's not that make sure your caliper slides are clean and lubed because if the caliper can't slide back and forth it can cause the same thing ...

and last make sure the piston in your caliper isn't sticking ,i mention this last because it is the least likely

Re: rear wheel locked

well, i had a similar problem about 6 months ago when i installed a new tire, the was alot of pressure, but when i had to literally stop on the pedal to get it to brake. took it to my buddies shop, he took out some fluid, and walla, problem solved.

to answer ur question, havn't changed the pads, or added fluid.

p.s. wadda u mean by the caliper "sticking?

Re: rear wheel locked

some times the piston in the caliper gets stuck if the caliper is old and worn out but i suspect you have too much fluid in the res

Re: rear wheel locked

imma go check the res right now.

Re: rear wheel locked

okay, def not fluid...it was filled 'till the lower mark.

but now, roughly 1 hour since i got home, i could move it, but the brake pedal is still very stiff and i'm sure that its still rubbin.

i also pointed my flashlight towards the caliper, and notice that the piston had alot of blackish meterial on the side, sorta like melted plastic.

i think i should just take it off and clean it with carb cleaner?

Re: rear wheel locked

couldn't hurt pump the brake out a little to get the piston out further so you can get it clean ,you may have got a plastic bag or some thing on there when the brake was hot and that may be the melted plastic

Re: rear wheel locked

clean and lube the slides while you have the caliper off it is the part that the caliper slides back and forth on

wait, are u talkin about the pins or the thing that the piston slides on?

...cause if i take the the piston all the way out, would that get air into the line?

don't take the piston out of the caliper just pump it out a little so you can clean it better and clean the slide pins while you have it apart

Re: rear wheel locked

**** **** **** **** ****!!!

skip the following paragraph.

i feel like an idiot, i tried takin the caliper off after takin out both bolts, wouldn't come out, tried pushing the piston back in and takin it out, didn't work, took of the res lid, didn't work. so i said **** it, rode it to my buddies shop..300ft away, i saw him leavin rite be4 i got there (didn't wanna catch him, with a almost locked rear wheel)

anyway, i park it in front of his shop and my rotor and caliper are super hot, a and as soon as i touch the disk, smoke comes off, and the middle of the rotor is now blue, does this mean its done?

then i realized the SO VERY OBVIOUS cause of the issue, the brake pedal, was stuck on the rear set and was applying pressure....unbolted the MC, and rode it home. PROBLEM SOLVED.

but ****, is my rotor done?

Re: rear wheel locked

it's probably ok just make sure your pads are still good if they feel like there not working as good as before just scuff them up a little

Re: rear wheel locked

hope so, and no, no- cracks.

now, roughly 4 hours later, it seems that the blue-ness is going away, it might just be in my head tho. ill test it out tomorrow.

p.s. define "scuff em up"

Re: rear wheel locked

take out the pads if they are glazed and don't feel like they are gripping as good as before and use some sand paper to scratch them up a little to get rid of the glaze

Re: rear wheel locked

i bought one for $40 shipped but i just checked paypal and he refunded my money....not sure wtf is goin on.

P.S. takin the freeway back today, goin 55ish, and i noticed the bike wanting to slow down, instantly knew it was the break, pulled over, and the rotor was super hot, melted/smoked the alpinestars star off my glove instantly. i'm gonna install my spare MC tomorrow. (pretty sure thats the problem)
