12 Volts is 12 volts. As long as you did not cross your terminals, you would definatley know that. You would have blown fuses or a big melted bundle of plastic that use to be your wiring harness. Sounds like you may have a problem with your reg/rect check your voltage output with a volt meter when the bike is off the bike idiling and the bike reved to approx 6-7000 RPM. You can check a repair manual for exact output but it should not be exceeding 14-15 volts max when it is revved. But it does not matter what year bike your battery is out of. The only differences are size cranking amps and battery chemistry.

the rectifer i had on it last melted the plug so i thought that went bad so i put another one on and its hasnt melted and it gets hot but all rect do get hot... the whole thing with the battery is that they are 12 volts.. but they have diffrent outputs or amps...

That is cranking amps. A 12 volt battery is 12 Volts. I would check into the wiring harness leading into your rectifier. I just replaced on for a customer on an R6 after he went through 3 reg/rect. Dumb question but you did not jumstart your bike or use a start feature of more than 20 amps on a battery charger did you?
