2003 636 engine tapping
I just bought a 2003 636 w/ 5700 miles on it. I noticed that when the engine is cold, it taps pretty loud, when it's warm, it isn't that bad, but still noticeable. My car used to tap, and it was ok, typical LS1 motor, but I don't know if bikes are different. Coming from racing cars to bikes and stunts, I don't know how much knowledge interchanges. Are kawasakis usually really loud engines? What can I do? The guy I bought it off said he just changed the oil, maybe he didn't use synthetic and I should change it using that? Any opinions? The bike runs fine, feels fast as hell compared to my old 2002 GSXR600. Please HELP! I just got back into the game and don't want to get out! Thanks!

Let a mechanic hear it, they make tell you its ok to ride, depending on the noise, mine has had a noise for quite some time now, here are some common causes, and depending on how bad it is, you may need to service it now, or just in the near future.
3 most common problems.
Cam chain tensioner.
Stretched cam chain.
Valves need adjustment.
My bike did the exact same thing, I replaced the cam chain tensioner.
It went away.
I just had my valves adjusted at the shop. Regular service interval time ($400)
Now I have 2k more miles, and its ticking again for me, this time I think my cam chain is stretched out. I have been REALLY REALLY hard on my bike, If I would ride it normal, It would not require as much attention, but that takes the fun out of riding, dosent it.

yeah you said it all 12oclocker....also some noises are characteristics of the motor and you can never really do anything to make it stop, theres alot going on with a 4 stroke motor. And different oil will hardly make any difference.....maybe go with something a little thicker may help a tad.

Re: 2003 636 engine tapping
Thanks for the replies. I will probably take it to a local shop around here and have them look into it. I just don't have the money right now though. I am going to have to ride it as is for another couple weeks til money comes. Hopefully it is just the cct. So fix that first?
I plan on setting it up for street stunting, I am no where near parking lot stunting yet. I just want a little more torque to make the wheelies a little easier. I guess I should go one down in the front and up 3 in the rear? Any suggestions on that? When I do that, will/should I get a new chain and sprocket/cct? So that will solve the prob? Because I can just wait to do that all at once.
