F4i Headlight Problem
F4i Headlight Problem
I just finished rebuilding my 02 f4i. I bought it from a friend who crashed it and redid the whole front end. There is only one problem left. The headlight doesnt work. When I power it on with the low beam on, the high beam light on the gauge stays on. If I switch it to high beam it still stays on. Neither of the lights turn on in the headlight during this whole process.
So far I have tried a new headlight harness with new relays, and tried bulbs from my friends f4i. Both to no avail. Does anyone have any clue to what the problem might be?
Also, it is to my knowledge that the headlights will work with the bikes electrical system on, but engine off. Is this accurate? Thanks!

Re: F4i Headlight Problem
My F4i headlight would not turn on until the bike started, but once the bike was off it would stay on until the key was off. What you need to do is get a test light... and you need to test your main harness that plugs into your upper harness. So basically, what you need to do is put the test light in each port and flip your light switch on and off. Do this for every port, and if your test light turns on and off as you flip the light switch then you know your problem is in the upper harness area, even a bad headlight.
If you want to test your headlight, then try popping your headlight into another friends F4i and see if it works... if it does then you know your problem is elsewhere.
If you think its the switch, then take the switch off and test it on a friends bike that you know is working.
Really, there are only a couple of places it can be. Headlight, switch, harness, or fuse panel. Those are really the only places your problems could be.... it would be kind of far fetched if your main harness was damaged, but again you did say this bike was wrecked so try what I said and if you don't find your problem then you might need to really consider looking into taking your bike to a dealership and having it tested!

Re: F4i Headlight Problem
I have a 2002 F4i, I just bought it and it's my first bike. When I bought it the low beam headlight bulb was burnt out but not the high. I replaced the light bulb and they both worked for a while... just this week my low beam went out again, and just tonight my high beam just went out now. I have not checked the bulbs yet, but even if they were just burnt out I must have a short? Someone please give me some advice. Thank You

and like farley said, you have to start the bike to get the headlight to turn on. try that. if not then there is a crossed wire somewhere or your gauges are messed up causing your highbeam indicator to stay on. i would check for a short first.
Re: F4i Headlight Problem
my headlight is doing the same thing did we ever resolve this issue? only thing done to my bike was bypassing the tip over at the headlight and the other harness it plugs into.
Re: F4i Headlight Problem
Stupid response but im gunna make it anyways. are you sure there isn't a tap or splice into the headlight wires for a kill switch on the lights?? Cause I run all my bike head an tail lights on a secondary kill switch for those time I do not want to be seen at night, an have had the line ground out an switches fail causing this same problem. till I learned to do it right. Just saying. Let us know if you find it.
