Blown motor - plz help

so i was doing a standup wheelie on my f4i .. scraped the 12 a bit and proceeded to go into wobbles.. i ended up losing it, bailing, and the bike rolled over, laying on its side, with the tank on the lower side

i got a ton of oil into the manifold and it was blowing smoke for a good 5 minutes at idle.

while letting it idle.. after 5 minutes, with the bike at 107 degrees, i revved it a bit (to maybe 5-6,000 rpm) and all of a sudden i hear a clattering, and then parts of my engine case start falling from the engine, pissing oil everywhere.

after inspecting the damage it appears that the front left side of the lower motor casing basically blew up leaving a hole about 3-4 inches in diameter at the seam that meets the bottom piece of the engine case.

anyone have any idea what happened?

i'm guessing this is mechanical failure however i bought the motor second hand from a wrecked bike.. is it possible there was a stress fracture from an impact that would have made the motor wreck? from what i have heard f4i motors are indestructible?

any input would be appreciated..

Was the bike hard to start? Did you push start it? MIght have hydrolocked the #1 cylinder with oil, bent the con rod and it finally snapped.

+1 if it was hard to start or you had to push start it. It probablky had too much oil to just let it smoke out. Shoulda pulled the plugs and cranked it.

Re: Blown motor - plz help

anything can be fixed, its a machine, just not very cost efective if you can't rebuild motors or weld (case halfs are **** aluminum so welding them is really no easy task either).

Re: Blown motor - plz help

Sounds like you hydro locked a cyclinder but forced it to run with the other 3 that werent locked, that caused damage to the rod/journal. And when you tried to rev it up it gave out.........

Next time pull the plugs and get some oil out of the cylinders before you start it again if it was blowing that much smoke

Dam, is it really that bad to run em after they roll like that? Mine rolled over onto the tank last night, and when it restart smoked like hell.

Is this a common thing? should i have pulled my plugs last night as well?

It was a bit hard to start too, at first, then smoked for 15 minutes.

ahhhhh.. That makes me feel better. You really had to force it i guess, to bend a rod or somethin. Oil doesnt compress to well i guess.

Re: Blown motor - plz help

uh yeah if its hydrolocked pull the pistons out..its one thing if it starts then smokes some but having to force it to turn over is bad...obviously..just kill the bike as soon as it falls over

Re: Blown motor - plz help

yea "usually" the starter does not have enough power to bend or break anything, rule of thumb..... if it was on the ground and the starter wont turn it over DO NOT PUSH START IT!
just remember to stand back when evacuating the cylinders throught the spark hole, 180psi of fluid does not feel good shooting up your nose, cuz you were holding the clutch in and hit the start switch at the same time.......

not that thats ever happend to me.

yea you filled the airbox, when you turned it up and sat it on the sidestand is when it started to fill #1, then eventually but quickly gobbled enuff fluid for hydrolock. At least you got a new one ready to go.
