Can't Shift

I have a 1999 Kaw. Ninja 250 and just installed a new shifter (my old one broke off in my wreck) and I've been riding with the new shifter since Sunday with zero problems (I rode it everyday to)
Today I was getting ready to turn and I went to down shift... and I pulled in the clutch and went to press down but it wouldn't go down at all.... or up for that matter. It felt like it was pressed down a bit from it's usual position and I even stopped then tried it or tried to pull really hard it just won't budge... the nuts holding each shift stick thing to the ***** were loose so I tightened them up and it still didn't work.
The part that holds the shifter to the footpeg bolt was losoe as well so I'mma loosen everything up and try to tighten it today when I get home from school as it's at a friend's house.... But what do you think the problem could be? I'm hoping it's something simple as I'm rather broke right now.
Going to have the friend that installed the shifter look at it but I'd like to get it fixed before Friday... So I'mma try to do it myself so if you can tell me anything to look for or advice I'd appreciate it!
Also I can still go and rolls foward with the motor fine etc so it's not the clutch.... My friend told me it might be my shift fork or something and I'd be better off buying a whole new motor which god only knows how much that would be

Re: Can't Shift
I doubt it's the forks in the trans. The shifter rod goes through the engine from the shifter side to the clutch side. I bet you broke part of the shifter that is part of the assembly that the shifter shaft is attached to. Not that hard of a fix. It's behind the clutch basket. Remove clip on shifter side, remove clutch cover and clutch basket then the whole shaft should pull right out. I am sure somthing is broke on that shaft. Easy fix, hardest part is removing the clutch basket, it has a big lock nut that can be a bitc h to remove.
In some cases that shifting mechanisium just moves out of place when you wreck on shifter side. Good Luck.

Why would it just go out like that I was just crusing and just got done upshifting to 6th and then I was about to come down.... Then bam, like a dead shift lever it wasn't firm or anything just hanging there I'm hoping it just needs to be tightened.

Thanks for the help Shwartz & Crtchrcktr

Re: Can't Shift
usually when u crash on the shifter side.. it fvcks up the gear above the one you wrecked in.. i.e. you wreck in 1st gear, 2nd gear will be gone.. 3rd gear wreck, 4th would be gone.. if it's stuck in 6th (which makes me wonder why you said "it wouldn't shift up for that matter") i doubt you crashed in 5th.. so it's probably just adjustment.. if the bolts were loose it probably slipped down a little bit, so you didn't have leverage to switch gears

Re: Can't Shift

(How'd you know that was coming)
It def isn't in the normal position of like straightly level across from the footpeg is all the way down... and I can't get it to go back up but then again I have no mechaniable ability so tightened everything up but it's still that way I'm just at a loss.. ****
