929 Freestyle Cage mods?

I've decided to modify my freestyle cage. The bike fell from a 12 the other day and the loop smacked my stator cover and pushed my stator inwards demolishing the stator and the cover. Cage did its job very well but I'd like to make it a bit more rigid--maybe move it off the motor mount too. Mod 1 would be to add another pair of arms back to the swingarm hole with some all thread. Mod 2 would be to weld an external tab off the frame and relocate the sliders so they dont use the motor mounts. Anybody got any pics of a modified FI cage or some other ideas? For some reason I dont think the added arms will be enough---

Re: 929 Freestyle Cage mods?

How about the large 17mm motor mounts a few inches aft of the upper motor mounts? These mounts are a lot beefier and you would have to chop the fairing...

Re: 929 Freestyle Cage mods?

why would you spend the time to do all those mods. just buy a cage that works and you dont have to mess with it any more.

a cage that bends in and breaks your cases isnt a very good cage.

cages are made to protect your motor. if they arent doing that, its a waste of money.

^ he has a point, but then again, every cage will break and bend, the longevity of it is what matters

Re: 929 Freestyle Cage mods?

But the more I think about it--the more logical it sounds to build any type of cage off the rear motor hanger--anybody agree? disagree?

I'm saying this because the upper mount on the 929/954 on the stator side threads into the head and certain types of problems associated with that end up in replacing the entire head which really sucks. (Luckily I found a head on ebay yesterday)

All cages eventually DO fail, but when they do, I would rather avoid replacing motor heads and motors--MXD what do you think about this rear hanger idea?

Re: 929 Freestyle Cage mods?

i myself am a fabricator welerd. withthat sai di wont buy a 2 piece cage again. they bend and if you take em off an dget em back on they are a*****. a cage that doesnt bend IMHO isnt really a good one. that means stress is put to the motor mounts. i rather replace a cage any day than motor mounts.
youre fall was a 12 fall those ALWAYS hurt cage. i broke a powers cage like that and bent my FI cage. any cage from teh 12 falls ive had would have bent and if they didnt my mounts woulda ripped off. i had a freak 12 fall and teh worst that happened was it flexed and poked a hole in my oil pan and left my oil all over the lot.
the FLEXING in a cage design, NOT rigidity is what ABSORBS....

read again ABSORBS impact and since it flexes it doenst pass teh impact from indestructible cages to eth bike

anyone beg to differ?

You got a really good point there nino-If I did'nt have a cage, my stator would have gotten pushed into the crankshaft and fu(ked the entire block. I did say I wanted to make the cage more rigid but what I meant to say was I wanted to mount it in a less damage prone area on the frame and the rear mount looks like the best place to put the stress from a hit if that makes any sense--The cage takes the impact, absorbs it to a certain extent but the motor mounts are still getting worked pretty good--i think we can all agree on that--

Re: 929 Freestyle Cage mods?

yes i totaly i mean TOTALLY understand you.

but id rather replace stators any day than stripped mounts. nah mean. they might cost a bit more but frames are difficult and a hassle to replace. and frame damage cant be hidden as much if youre gonna sell teh bike.

i did a FI cage mod. do a search under my name. i took my sliders and cut them down to where the loop goes in, that way they are liek 1.5-2" shorter and less leverage when teh bike falls. i made my own replacement sliders from mcmaster carr delrin. BTW delrin is 9$ for a foot!!!!

anyways i thought of buying soem REALLY hard rubber instead of delrin to absorb teh impact and keep a few under teh seat incase they break. but a ahrdened rubber would DEFINITELY take more abuse. and i want IT to tak ethe abuse and not transfer it. its an idea im toying with

Oh man.. I have to post pictures of my MXD cage. Its THRASHED!!!! It was good for 1 tumble and now its bent to $HIT!!!!!

If you want a great design for 929's... talk to Zackie Chan. He has a bullet proof setup if you want to add to an FI cage.

Re: 929 Freestyle Cage mods?

Behind the poly are valve springs.. you let the poly stick out like 2" so when the bike hits the valve springs take most of the hit. He made his from scratch, but I want to add to an FI cage with Zac's design!

you had the first design and i must admit, it was trash. we have redesigned them to take a beating. i think on our first design, it wasnt mounted up solidly to the frame, but out new design is exactly like the F4i so there shouldnt be anymore problems.

any happen to your bike? just curious.

Re: 929 Freestyle Cage mods?

that cage design above seems better since it distributes to 2 bolts on each side as opposed ot one. some kind of rear mounting brace with a loop or stator/clucth case protection would be great.

to me a cage is a cage, they will ALL break , even an MXD.

i dunno why everyoen is so gung ho about indestructible cages. its the bike we are trying to keep indestructible. sure a cage has to be strong and my FI cage has served well (MXD guy you know all cages serve their purpose) and all cages will give at one point.

i think cage designs have come a far way.

CBO used to run powers cages on his 636
Darius and Kyle woods run FI
warren james and j beats run 905's

the list goes on and on. funny thing is most and i bet all are made of 4130 cromo if not 1018 steel and are all mounted to teh same places, just sugar coated differently

Re: 929 Freestyle Cage mods?

Yea.. actually MXD it smashed into my Stator cover. Zackie Chan was there when I wrecked it, it wasn't that bad of a tumble. Even he thought it should have held up more than it should of, but that was my first cage ever and I didn't know what to expect. He bought it for me while he was in Vegas... I think he said you guys were out there, but Im not sure. If you want, I can send you pictures of the tubes. The left side tube is bent down about 1 1/2" inches... and the lower bar by the stator cover is in about an inch.

I'll get you pics of it tomorrow so you can see how thrashed it is.

yeah ive had one guy down here smash a stator too, thats when i redeisgned it. so far its been over a month and ive heard only good things about it.

and el nino, i agree, every cage WILL break with enough abuse. they are only steel. but i do think that cages shouldnt cause ANY damage to a motor or they just arent doing their job. if cages are bending into stator, they are junk and should be redesigned.

Mr. Farley, if you send me the junk cage, i wil replace it with the new design. its our fault so i have no problem replacing it with a new one. sorry you had a bad experience

I agree to an extent. Allthough I have done several 12drop tests and the cage and everything on the bike was fine. It was on an SRAD. watch the footage.
