Rear brake during faster wheelies?
Rear brake during faster wheelies?
Ok, I have slow wheelies down pretty good... can 12, ride idle, coast a little, ect. But the fastest I've been riding the brake is about 30-35mph. And Ive gotten so used to going slow that I cant ride em on the highway anymore for sh*t!
This is very upsetting... it used to be just the opposite, could rock highway, but couldn't go slow.
Are highway wheelies the same concept as far as the brake goes? I used to be able to ride long hw wheelies, but w/ no rear brake at all. And anytime I do a faster wheelie at the spot in second gear I feel like it's too much for the rear brake, like it'll get it way too hot (brake fade).
Should I be more concerned w/ throttle control/engine brake at speed or can I still rock the brake hard to control height?
Thanks for any help- kj

Re: Rear brake during faster wheelies?
well i dont know **** for stuntin but sounds like to me that your on the brakes the whole time. i think most of the time when people are doin wheelies they use the brake just to keep them from going past bp, like go to far, scrub off a lil, but not so much that you goin forward. correct me if im wrong, but thats my two cents
Re: Rear brake during faster wheelies?
no, you shouldn't ride the brake to control height, but you should tap it when you go past bp. what you don't want to do is go into a negative throttle position to bring it back up from past bp, that's chop.
keep it neutral or positive, and use as little brake as possible to keep it at bp.
right now in first you're staying positive with the throttle and countering with brake, that's how we all learn. eventually your throttle control will become greater and you'll be able to keep it at a more neutral throttle position, which requires far less brake.

Pretty much sums it all up.

I don't know if its the same case for you but i was in the same boat awhile back. I was always on the brakes what i though was too hard on my fast stuff. At one point i was in second trying to move my foot to get in a position to use get off the brake a little, my foot slipped off completely and i did a nice squidly loop at 35mph. So I rode home all pissed off and adjusted my pedal a bit. I now am certain i was never on the brake as far as i thought. I have plenty of pad left and no excessive wear on the rear rotor. I'm even starting to learn coasters now which obviously means i can't be on the brake too hard. So do whatever you think is right, but i personally believe its easier to replace pads or a rear rotor than it is to fix a broken motor mount and rashed arms...

Re: Rear brake during faster wheelies?
now, when you say idle? are you just going slow and staying on the throttle the whole time and staying on the brake the whole time and balcancing it out the whole time? becuase tahts NOT idle, thats just going slow. i learned by doing it that way and it ended up with alot of bad habits cause of it. now if you were really idleing, you would be just bearly tapping the brake now and then to stay in balance. and that wouldnt carry over into fast **** becuase your not on the brake the whole time. you should be able to take your hand off the throttle.
dont know if thats off base or not but thats what it sounds like to me.

how are those coasties coming?
Re: Rear brake during faster wheelies?
Yeah... I pretty much know all that people have said. I guess I was talking more like 12ing and slowing down a little at highway speeds. I should've been more clear.
When I said idle, I clutch it up from dead stop and no throttle at all... just tap tap tap brake.
When I'm ridin 12's, I'm on the throttle and riding the brake pretty hard sometimes to stay behind balance pt. and slow it down...
Bottom line is I think my throttle control has suffered from using alot of high idle going slow, and I'm thinkin too much brake brake brake to manage height.
Thanks fellas. I'm gonna work on it tomorrow.

that right there says it all. is your idle up? you need to learn to let the idle take over an carry you. to do ilde you should just bearly tapping that brake. it takes a while to get it but once you do you will say damn im and idiot thats so easy.
Re: Rear brake during faster wheelies?
Ya dude... I can rock idle all day long.
What I said was, when I do 12's(NOT IDLE)... I'm on the brake blah blah blah.
And yes... when I'm doin idle, I have my idle set at 2500.
