954 engine noise

i have a 02 954 and it has a slight "ticking" noise when i start it. it continues while running and increases speed as rpms rise. anyone else have this problem or know what it may be?

Re: 954 engine noise

I've been told that it is the fuel injectors. How bad is it? I hear mine a little when I start it up, but I don't hear them when I ride.

Same here, it's always been that way. I wouldn't worry to much about it.

Re: 954 engine noise

I TELL YOU THIS, 929/954 MOTORS ARE RELIABLE BUT WHEN IT THROWS A ROD IT IS USUALY THE #3 PISTON..I JUST TORE DOWN MY 929 ENGINE BECAUSE OF THE NOISE I WAS HEARING..REPLACED ALL CON ROD BEARINGS..#3 WAS THE ONLY ONE SHOWING WEAR.. STICK A LONG METAL ROD OR SCREW DRIVER AGAINST THE ENGINE BELOW THE THROTTLE BODIES AND PLACE THE OTHER END ON YOUR EAR..COMPARE THAT WITH NOISE COMING FROM BENEATH THE VALVE COVER..AND YOU WILL KNOW IF YOU HAVE VALVE TROUBLE OR BEARING TROUBLE..ALSO TAKE YOUR OIL FILTER OFF AND OPEN IT..LOOK FOR METAL..

Re: 954 engine noise

I am a mechanic at a Honda dealer, and I have to say, they are all loud. Don't worry about it unless you start hearing a deep knock. I was worried about one particular bike, but then I listened to a few more, and they all sound like something is rattling around in the cases.

Re: 954 engine noise

my 929 sounded the same way-so do both my 954s-the way it was explained to me was that the way the airbox is located over the rocker arms it works as megaphone amplifying engine noise-my ***** tick like hell and run great.

Re: 954 engine noise

I've heard many 954's and they seem to all have that funny sound I know mine does.

Re: 954 engine noise

I have an 02 954 and there’s a slight rattle at 3500 rpm and I don’t know whether to be concerned. But at idle it doesn’t make noise and anything over 3500 it doesn’t make noise either. It’s only between 2000 and 3500. Should I be concerned? It honestly sounds like the exhaust
