Balance-point for stoppies...
Here's my problem. I have been riding on & off for 12 years now. I've had a CR125, YSR, VFR700, F2, F4 & a GSXR. Over the years wheelies have been no problem, but I've simply had a mental thing with stoppies. It was one of my rules... never go for the stoppie. I've been riding with my buddy James who is ultra-talented, and am feeling left out when he rides 2+ mile wheelies at 105mph, starts lifting stoppies & derivatives, etc., etc., etc. So I told myself enough is enough, grabbed my ***** and started practicing endos to start. I couldn't believe how natural they felt once getting the "oh **** factor" out of the way. One day of practicing, and I was getting the bottom of my rear tire up to chest/head level on my endos. I can't bring them down perfectly straight everytime, but they're always controlled. I still wanted to pull stoppies though. After a few days, I went for the stoppies & I'm only comfortable lifting them to about 45 degrees, but to the point of the story. I know, I know... I'm long winded, but from writing on other type boards I've noticed the experienced guys generally like a background on the newbies. Anyhow I bring her up to about 60mph, and once I load the front-end & start lifting the rear I'm at about 45mph. I'm comfortable holding them up, but it seems that I've decelerated from 45mph all the way down to near a stop within moments. I generally let her down at about 5-10 mph as I don't feel comfortable riding the stoppie all the way to a stop. That's another thing I'm trying to focus on. It pisses me off, I am totally comfortable stopping an endo to 5:00, but trying to bring the stoppie to a full stop is still uncomfortable. My question here though is how do I scrub less speed while in the stoppie? I'm aware the simple answer is " more control", but is there something that you all know that would help with this dillema. I've seen the clip of Joe Wilson doing the 330+ foot stoppie & he didn't look to be going so fast at the lift point, or more so you can see him going really slow at the end. Any help is appreciated.
If you are starting to brake at 60, and then lifting at about 40, I bet you are letting the rear float up. Start braking at 60, and try to have your front suspension compressed by 50 instead of 40 and snap the back wheel up instead of letting it float or glide up. You will get alot further the first time you get it right. If you watch any of the pros do it, pay attention to how quick they get the rear up. That's tha ticket.

Your problem is one of the most common among semi newbies at stoppies. What you have to do is pitch your weight forward eventually lifting your **** off the seat, it takes weight off the back helping you lift if up faster if you apply the same breaking input as normal.
By standing up and using your body as a pivot, doing this allows the bike to move underneath you , your body does not move with the bike, this helps your judgement of the hight of the stoppie. Also using this method helps you to prevent a nasty flip because as I said above your **** is off the seat and your body don't move just the bike so when you have it too high the seat hits you in the **** warning you of a flip.
You will find the back will now lift easyer and quicker then before,
As you practice you will gain more confidence and with confidence will come higher longer stoppies. Always remember the higher the stoppie is the further it will go.
The method I told may not be the best for the longest stoppies
but personally I find this the best way of doing long high distance stoppies.
Hopefully you may find it will help you until you get good. and when that happens you will be able to bring it quickly up from any speed.

Now that you mention it, I have noticed that I do get a quicker & more decisive lift when I put a lot of body english into it, but I only will do so when I'm feeling real aggressive. Thinking back when I lean hard into the clip-ons as I crack the lever after the pre-loading she lifts very quickly, but when I do this I am actually as you explained lifting my body off the seat as I lean in forward. I feel much more control in these situations when I am off the seat as it's like the bike is moving underneath you instead of the bike moving you. I have only been doing stoppies for 2.5 weeks now so I'm still a little uncomfortable when I lift them over 60 which really pisses me off
! I have the height down solid, that's no problem as I can get the bottom of the rear to eye level, but when I try lifting it quickly at 60 and above I either immediately get headshake or I feel the rear immediately start drifting to the right & I put her back down. I want more speed so I can ride these things longer although I know that I should be able to get considerable distance from lifting at around 50 like I do. I just wasn't born with the stunna skilz I guess, I have to work for it. And practice I do, EVERYDAY. I hear about these guys lifting 500+ feet stoppies, and I'm still trying to roll them for more then 3 seconds. I'm up for longer as the lift itself takes a few seconds as well, but once I get to a constant height I can only hold it for the 3-4 seconds I mention. I'm not driving outside of my abilities to get there, but with my bike as my only transportation I practice them daily & when the streets are clear I test my limits. It just burns me b/c like I said the height doesn't bother me, I can get near vertical coming to a stop, but I just can't ride them far. Practice, practice, practice... I know! In a month I'll be looking back like, "Remember when I could only ride them at a constant height for a few seconds." :p

Yah man! Thanks for the referral. Great site. The prospective you get from the people here hits closer to home for me. I have really picked up some ideas have come to fruition in practice, and I believe the reason is that the people explaining are very experienced in what they do. Where I'm not sure that is as much the case with that other board. It's just the way some people explain things here. The classifieds are definitely much less active here though.HOW IN THE HELL WAS DAYTONA!!!

I hear you brother, and thank you for the advice. I know it, too. I really do stay within my limits. I mean I push them a lot, but I'm not reckless. All I have is my baby, and she has to get me to work. On the other hand, god-damn do I want it! I want to hit 100 feet on my stoppies more then I can remember wanting anything in a very long while, and that fact alone is why I have to consciously keep such a tight reign on myself. I talk to myself in my helmet all day. When I'm not sharp, I tell myself to ease up, and vice versa. I don't want to have to come on here talking about a wreck, and I know for damn sure I'm no superstar so I'm going to stay humble, do my best to keep the rubber side down and by late summer hopefully I'll be yelling at myself about high-chair wheelies... the most unnatural feeling I have ever felt on a bike. I got up on the tank, drove around and cracked first a few times. No wheelies yet up there my brothers... NOT YET! That I know is outside of my limits.

Nasty harley chicks. That sucks.I hear you on the cold. I got stuck in the rain here like 4 out of 6 days last week, got sick and just can't get rid off it. I don't get much sleep though, and it seems to always be cold riding home at night after work. Good to hear you're feeling better.

Hi dudes...
I am new here......i just manage to do a stoppie using my nsr125
which is nt high yet..i was travelling at 40km/h and i manage to do a stoppie, close case..... but its nt always that i can manage to do it...sometimes i get front jerks...which i think i have pull in the brake too fast causing the front tire to skid or lock....
hw do i perfect it using a smaller bike..?
and i would wish to do a rolling stoppie....??
any previous 125 riders who can teach?

Anyhow you asked about the smaller bike, too. The process is the same for any bike. On the other hand I would imagine controlling/steering the smaller bike when in the air would be much easier. That is my problem. When I try high speed stoppies which for me is above 60mph, I immediately get drift. I do get it sometimes when already in a stoppie with the rear up high, and I just have to bring it to 10 mph or slower before landing so as not to high side. I need to get the steering down. My friends see me do stoppies with the turn at the end, and they think "I" am doing it, but really I'm just along for the ride. It actually happens a lot so I'm comfortable with the feeling, I just can't do it on command. I'm working everyday on getting it though!
As for the rolling stoppie question. I always get screwed up on the semantics with this one, but regardless it's all the same thing Holmes. In fact I think stoppies at low speed are easier then doing it at a stop.
Hope that helps.

i guess i will work damn hard to master stoppie b4 going on to rolling...
But as for rolling at wat speed do u recommend for a 125cc???
60mph? if going at 60mph it would be around 120km/h and for 125ccc it would need a 6th gear to maintain at 120km/h...so can i still endo?
i am just afraid of the landing....damn! hope nothing goes wrong and smoothly first for my stoppie~
hope to pull in high stoppies!!!

Don't be so hard on your self. From what you said you are doing good stoppies after only to 2.5 weeks of practising. You probably do have a natural ability because with stoppies if you can't do them after 2 weeks of practising then chances are you won't do them at all. The biggest barrier with doing tricks like stoppies is to overcome your natural bodly instincs of not doing such a crazy thing like that. Mark my words after a few more months you will be bringin em up no prob and holding em up for long, just keep practising.
The method of lifting your **** of the seat may be fine for me but for others may not be the best way of achieving a good long high stoppie. Try adapt a method of your own, one that you feel most comfotable doing, which is based around all the tips that you have had from other stuntlife members. Remember there is a universal, absolute perfect way to a stoppie...... that perfect method won't be good for every one. We all have a perfect way of doing one that suits are own abilitys and *****. So you my friend have to find it.
