slow stuff...kinda long

little frustated....
I've been progressing since the end of January with 1st gear slow stuff.
Mainly its been sitdowns with about 2+weeks of standups. I clutch em up around 3 mph, get about 10 o' clock and start using the brake as the bike reaches BP and beyond. My slowest has been around 17 mph but Im pushing HARD on the brake to fight the throttle. Even at 17 mph Im figthing the throttle (HARD, keeping my hand still) trying to control the height with the brake and being hard on it by easing into then easing off, but not completely off. It seems the bike wants to shoot higher even loop if the brake isn't weighed down a great deal.

Is this sort of normal?? In videos it seems people are completely on or off the brake and just tapping it (is this cause their idle is up??).

My guess: After clutching, Im staying on the throttle to long (or not easing off enough) when the bike reaches BP then Im forced to get hard on the brake to keep it at BP or a little beyond. Im getting better at using ONLY the brake to control the height (like on the 50) but I dont think I need so much!!

Question: To those that can rock BP, around 25 mph, for blocks or slower, do you constantly tap the brake if you feel the bike increasing height or just tap it constantly no matter what? Or do you EASE into and out of the brake, but always keeping pressure on it. CAn you be to hard on the brake?? Should I just keep doing what I and it'll get smoother.

thanks for reading and or any advice

ok, first of all, DEFINATELY turn your idle up, somewhere between 3-4 K should be good. it will help you smooth the wheelie out and let you concentrate more on the brake and not the throttle. Secondly, if you are having to mash the brake really hard like you said, then you are using too much throttle. you should be able to slowly roll off the throttle until you are not using it at all, just letting the higher idle do its thing and just working the brake to keep it at BP. As for how much brake to use, at first you are gonna want to keep your foot on the lever, even oif you aren't pushing just so you know its there though. if you ride the brake constantly, it will be harder to balance it cause you will be constantly draggin the bike down. However, i know that removing your foot completely from the lever is VERY scary when learning BP slow stuff. Just take your time and try to use less and less brake and less and less throttle till you are off the gas completely and just tapping the brake when you NEED it, when the bike is coming back too far (about to touch tail). Hope that helps. If at all possible, go ride with someone that has them down, watching someone else while you are learning is a great learning tool no matter what it is you are trying to learn!

Thanks for the quick reply!!
I thought I might be using to much throttle.
Yeah, all the semi-serious stunters start practicing mid spring-summer or atleast the ones I know, loosers.
I wanted to learn without turning up the idle but maybe its time to start. After you learn with the throttle up do you ever go back to no idle??
Thanks again John

I rock stand ups too, but for me their harder to judge height. But I can understand from the little I've done that once get them down they'll be easier then sitdowns.

yeah, I went out last night and practiced using less throttle. That worked!!
I was able to hold a slow roll at about 20 mph for double the distance I usually could do.
Thanks again for your advice John.
Wish your were here in Sacramento..

No problem man, i been in the game a while and really like being able to help out the up and comers when i can, that's why i check in the help and how to a lot. Sounds like your doing better, keep at it and you'll have it at BP rollin on idle in no time. The key is practice, practice, practice!!! The more you practice the better you'll get and the faster you'll get there!

As far as turning the idle down after you have it mastered?!?! Well, for doing slow stuff in parkinglots, you are going to have to leave it up, its what lets you let go of the bars, keeps the bike smooth, etc. However, once you have it down and you want to thtow up a slow wheelie after a traffic light or whatever, you can learn to pop it up and then lock you wrist at a LOW throttle setting and rock it slow without turning the idle up. Me and ed practice that on the street cause it hepls with throttle control. Eventually after you practice it enough, you'll be able to roll just as slow without idle up as with it. just wont be able to rip the "no-throttle hand" tricks off.

BTW, i wish i was anywhere that is warmer than here!

if you take the upper fairing off,you can watch the angle of the forks to judge height, also stuntin in a small area will help you learn to slow it down faster

Re: slow stuff...kinda long

Just one more Q. (excellent thread BTW :YEAH )

I use high idle, and get wheelie back, right back to slow it down. When I get to the point of no throttle needed, the speed seems to decrease more and more and more, almost to like a stop. Cant figure why, except that maybe im slightly past BP and still using brakes. If I tap too hard, the front comes forward again, but I need throttle to bring it back up!!!

Anyone get this issue, or is this part of learning?

I had this happen when I was learning 12's too. You slow down so much that the bike stalls in the air or falls over. You are to far past the BP. So you are using more brake to keep the tail off the ground and it also slows you down to a crawl. The more you practice the more you'll get used to that sweet spot.

To do a 12 you have to be on the brake. To ride out a 12 with minimum brake use you have to have the wheelie a hair past BP. Riding a wheelie without the rear brake is just a BP wheelie. A 12 is a wheelie past BP = needs the rear brake to work. I hope this helps.
