Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

First...I aint no stunter so go easy on me.

My entire motorcycling experience has been roadracing...it's all I know.
Because of that, I have ZERO rear brake control. My brain literally will not connect w/ my right foot. That's my dilemma

I can do all the reg streetstunt stuff, 1st and 2nd gear BP hichairs, spreaders, flamingos etc..., but I can't work that rear brake in 1st to get to the next level.

I have very good dexterity in my hands and pretty confident I can work a handbrake.
Will a handbrake make up for no footbrake doing the superslow stuff, or is it just an aid...not a replacement?

Basically I am asking if I should invest in a handbrake to make up for refusing to learn the footbrake.
(And nobody tell me to just practice more w/ the footbrake....cause I DON'T practice )

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

im going to do exactly what you said not to. practice. i tryed 12s for 3 months on my 929 and wrecked over 100 times and spent tons of money fixing stuff. i bought a zx6 and tryed some more wrecked once then all of a sudden got it. it just came to me at a random moment. i think with a handbrake you would encounter the same problems with a footbrake. when your learnin when you get past that balance point your brain shuts down. hand or foot all you wanna do is jump off

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

the hand brake will not replace the foot brake for no handers and regular slow stuff the rear foot brake is where its at what u should do in all honesty hop on a quad and wheelie that u will feel more comfortable with the rear brake then just go to the bike and do it if u dont want to practice then u will get no where

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

the thing with the handy is that its use to take things to the next level. i have a handy on my bike but havent tried uesing it yet. i pretty much got my rear brake down but am still working on it. if you dont learn the foot brake you will never be able to do no handers. but other than that the handy will be fine for any other trick. either way just learn the way you want to learn, just be carfull doing it. i learned how to do slow wheelies and 12s before i learned all the fast stuff. i am just starting to do spreaders now. when the time comes for you to learn the foot brake you will do it but till then just practice the way you feel comfortable doing it. just get the handy you will need it sooner or later.

That's what I was afraid of.

That's good advice. Unfortunately I dont have access to a quad....wish I did. But I don't.

You guys are right though, I prolly should just forget about stunting around town for a month and JUST practice instead. Whenever I do practice for like a half hour (at most), it's like "I got it!" but then I don't practice again for like another month so I forget it.

I was hoping the handbrake would be a quick fix....thanks for the advice

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

do you know someone with a fiddy? That will teach you the back break too. Its ok that you feel the way you do cause everyone thinks its simple, but its not. That point where you dont jump off the bike is hard to get too. You must trust in your self and in that back break. Learning on a quad or fiddy will save you thousands of dollars, if you like ur bike to always look minty.

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

No doubt Speed is oldschool. I thought you started getting the brake down a while back. I know what you are sayin too about the rear brake and racing. I spent the first year on my first sportbike with roadracers on the street and track and after that trying to train myself to not ride with the ball of my feet on the pegs was hell. You have the skill and know what to do and how to do it.

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

I haven't posted any advice in a while, but I just closed my bar and I'm kinda shitty, so here it goes.

I read most of the posts and everyone is right. Coming from an auto racing background (brake bias) and also being "old school" (86 fz600 new) I can sympathize with you. It is very hard to train the road race foot to work in a stunting world, but that will help you in the long run. As delicate as you are with your right hand, you will become with the right foot...... holy ****, I sound like YODA!!! But think of it like this. Your bike is a pendulium (spelling) the right hand pushes you back and the right foot pushes you forward. Hold a constant right hand and balance the bike with your foot for practice.
I learned the slow stuff on a 99 R1. Crank the idle up to 3500 or higher and as you start to slow things down, you will be forced to ride the rear brake. It will also smooth out you street game. Killing the streets is oldschool as well as the 100mph wheelies.
Bottom line, handbrake or foot brake, its still the rear brake. Practice will get you there. Good advice is hard to get and if I am leading you wrong, let me know.
P.S. where are you from.

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

yo im in the same spot...its really a metal thing...because for months i couldnt do it then the next thing i know i was adjusting wheelies with only my rear brake..i learned by doing slightly quick 1st gear wheelies and landing with the rear brake...then i worked up higher to where the brake adjusted the wheelie not landed it...

that was so poetic

Someone posted up earlier "your brain shuts down when you go past balance point" That seems like such a true statement. Slow **** takes skill, but I think it is a huge mental game as well.

If you think a handbreak is the best then jump on a BMX bike and see if you feel comfortable using it.

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

I get no balance aspect from my quads, but it sure helps to teach you the back brake. Good luck dude, you pick **** up fast, I'm sure you'll have it soon.

Re: Backbrake vs handbrake...need advice

Thanks for the continued advice fellas...I appreciate it.

Jridin' ... Thanks for the compliments dude! You are a good rider fo sho, so that means alot. ****, you and SF Cradwell taught me to do spreaders

Yeah, I guess I should have explained myself better.
I do not do power wheelies. I can roll 20-25mph in first with no rear brake, just throttle control. I'm best at balance point tank work at 30-60mph.

My bike is a shitbox...

I ride when I am hung over and puking...

When I crash, I always brake a bone...

I've partied w/ the playas...

My bike gets me boobies...

The PoPo don't like me...

and I even somehow got into a couple of movies...

S-H-I-T .... Maybe I am a stunter ...NOT a good one, but a stunter. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Thanks again fellas! I am gonna just make a commitment to practice and quite runnning around showing off on the streets for a while. I am sure I'll figure it out.
Thanks again
