front sprocket prob.....

on my 03 r6 the front sprocket came off (while riding)causing the nut on the counter shaft to bust off taking the threds with i called yamaha about it they said there was nothing they could do cuz it's out of warranty...... ...........i calld the local bike shop they said $900 to fix it now what?????????i thought about trying to rethred it but it's a hardend shaft and it's in between sizes should i weld a spacer in place of the nut and hope it has no effect on the balance of the counter shaft any thoughts or ideas would be great

Re: front sprocket prob.....

weld it on just the end/edge of the shaft....a good welder can put an even bead on it.... it wont vibrate and you can grind the weld off if you ever want to change sprockets (I would advise going ahead and getting a new sprocket before you weld, if it still has the 532 crap, go ahead and get a whole 520 set up)

Re: front sprocket prob.....

same thing happened to my friends R6. He just put the nut back on as tight as he could before it slipped and welded it. works fine now. next time buy a Honda!!!

I like this idea best. Don't know if Thomas meant weld the nut on or a washer either way. Here's my idea. I’d leave free play, and not but the nut or washer to tight aginst the sprocket. It will self center, you could have a bunch of free play and it would still be ok. Try not to get the counter shaft too hot while welding, for the obvious reasons. Seals. I'd hit it with 3 different tack welds equally spaced on the radius where the nut was.
I'd roll like that and not even sweat it.
