air box function

Currently, I'm riding without any ducting going to the air box on my ZX7R and it sounds totally different (no silencer boxes) anyone ever thought of just running straight ducting from the nose to the box? Are those silencer boxes engineered to improve the ram-air effect? I'm sure the answer to that is yes. Either way, anyone have any problems with rain water in their intakes or anything?

Re: air box function

my ZX7R is naked..make sure you have the hoses connected at the front of the air box or it makes funny sounds..other than that mines fine.

Re: air box function

.....no, the silencer boxes dont help the ram air effect, they hurt it. they are only there to pass the noise emmisions tests. so, yes, running straight ducting would help, but you would only get maaaayybe 1-5 hp(and even then that 5 would only come at like 160 plus). it would only help if you were racing at a competitive enough level that any little bit helps.

i am of the opinion that they are useless for all but like the top 10 or so racers that fight for the front spot. it takes like 125mph for the effect to even start taking place. for stunting they make no difference at all. put it this way......cbr929/954's dont even have ram air ducts from the factory............
