shifting in a wheelie
shifting in a wheelie
i have a 2000 zx6r and for fast stuff i do them in 2nd gear go about 35 40 and bounce and it comes up.....i hit my balance point around 65 but sometimes i gain to much speed and i was wondering how people shift in a wheelie.........can i just shift it without the clutch or use the clutch and rev match it....
Re: shifting in a wheelie

Re: shifting in a wheelie
I'm willing to bet that youre just doing a high wee and not a wheelie.(that's when you have to accelerate real fast in order to keep your bike up) You just gotta get the front end higher in the beginning of the wheelie. If you run higher wheelies, you dont need to apply as much throttle in order to keep it up THUS longer and nicer wheelies.
As far as shifting goes it's not bad but you gotta make sure you know the way your tranny behaves before you attemp this...
Once you get good at running higher wheelies without that much acceleration, pratice shifting into 3rd ONLY when you know that the bike wont have enough power to throw you backwards(as your front end is starting to come back down is a safe way to do it)... In thge beginning your bike is just going to strugle to stay up and will land soon after you shift 3rd, but the more you practice youll get to a point where the bike will stay up and youll bee able to run all of 3rd on one wheel. Just keep practicing and youll get a good feel and after a while youll be able to do it.
On my 99 r6 I started riding good 2nd gear wheelies and learned how to shift into 3rd an 4th. If you have the stock gearing youll land 2nd gear at 75-85mph 3rd gear at 105-115mph and 4th at 120-130 mph. It sounds like suicide but actualy landing a high speed wheelie is very smooth.
baby steps!!! dont try all this in a day

Re: shifting in a wheelie
i was in our lot practicing the other day when some kids in a lowered hatchback honda pull in and watch me. I stopped for alittle and went over and talked and right away one kid is like "Hey man why dont you shift into 2nd at around 9k." I just looked at him like hes a idiot and told him id rather not loop, Or ramp that curb down there into the ditch.
This was in a lot probably 150 yrds. He began to talk about how his friend does it and **** and i know his friend and hes a freakin douche... Enough of my rant just this post got me thinking about it heh.

Re: shifting in a wheelie
shifting in a wheelie when useing the clutch is not bad on ur bike or tranny . u can dry shift it but if not done right it will screw with the tranny sooner than later. if u are accel. while in a whoolie u are not at BP. BP is where the bike neither accel. or slows down. but anyways ............. to shift in a whollie(be careful) when ur chasin that biaatch outcrack the throttle a little more till it jerks back a little farther than ur riding and (u have to do this all very fast)let off the throttle, as ur letting off the throttle pull in the clutch, pop that biaatch in 3rd and let out the clutch while getting back on it.start with giving it a little gas. it will set down but then repeat a little more gas each time and soon u will keep that boy in the air.too much or slippin the clutch will put u on ur ***. (so be carefull) baby steps.
OH YEA! the reason u want to do it from 2nd to 3rd is for the simple fact that if u go from 1st to 2nd u take a chance of neutral bombin it (not makin it to 2nd)and it slams down. once u have 2nd to 3rd, 1st to 2nd is butter.my

Re: shifting in a wheelie
my only wreck came from shifting from 2nd to 3rd at around 60mph. i got 6 stitches in my knee. i've never shifted in a wheelie again and never will
but if your gonna do it, don't do it at redline, shift it low in the rpms...

Re: shifting in a wheelie
if your balanced no need to shift.just practice clutching/bouncing it up to BP faster, also your on a kawi, shitty transmissions shifting like that will end up blowing something out of your trasmission, ive broken both my transmissions in both the ninjas ive had.
