Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone else has used this method for repairing there plastics. I cant take credit for the idea because Squidmark did it to his front fender on his bike and told me about it, befor i did mine but it worked pretty damn well.

What you do is you take any normal house hold Soldering Iron and just run it along the crack in your plastic and it'll "fuse" the two sides together. I did this on the front and back of the crack. Its fairly strong and worked really well for me, Im also goin to add a layer of fiberglass on the backside to give it alittle more strength. The fender is on the bike now and is strong enough on its own but the fiberglass is "just in case". But the process took no more then 15 min and the plastic is as good as new (besides the crack needing to be covered in bondo to smooth it out again).

Chances of someone already trying this and ppl knowing about it are pretty high but i just figured id post because i havnt seen anything about it on the forums befor.

So quit buying plastics just fix em yourself :YEAH

And if you dont have a soldering iron, you can always heat up a screwdriver. We did this to a friend yz85, then ran the blow torch over from a distance to blend the color. Did a pretty good job. They have actual plastic welding kits, with filler rod and all, for about $20.

Yep they make actual plastic welders. I used one at the local body shop to put the tabs back on my one fairing for my Gixxer. Worked like a charm. I cleaned up all the cracks and **** in about 15 mins. All of them held up too... till it got looped

go to home depot or lows or what ever, get some ABS pipe glue, and some stuff called CAT HAIR it is fiberglass chop in resin. sand the inside of the crack, blow it out, put in ABS glue, drink one beer and eat fried chicken, sand the back "un seen side" of crack with 120 grit, blow off, put on some CAT HAIR fiber glass compound, drink one beer eat Bar-B-Q chicken, drink two beers, sand part till purdy, wash with soap, dry, paint, dry, rock out!

 

That is the best description i have ever heard in my life on how to do something.... you should be writieing instruction manuals bro..... :YEAH

 

ok, so i HEARD you can melt zip ties into the crack and it will fix it??? kinda a "ghetto" plastic weld??

 

zip ties are the answer to everything. no girlfriend? wrap a ziptie around your ****!

 

Man, I used 2-part epoxy. Smeared that **** all over the place. Once it was dry, I just sanded it all down w/an orbital sander and it looked decent enough.

2-part epoxy's nasty stuff. You can glue furniture to the walls w/that ****. It only costs like $4 for a big *** tube of it. Once it's hard, it's pretty much like plastic.

heya gents.....the advantage to the plastic welder is that it cools the plastic as well as melting it.....giving you better control and less sanding.......the best filler plastic is a piece of trashed plastic....it is made of the same blend and melts at the same temp......cough up a buck on ebay......for big cracks, open it up just like a weld it holds better......

I personally lie using a drill bit and zip ties to repair plastic......you're gonna ddrop it again anyways....why make it look good??? get to hold together enough not to mess you up....ding ding good enough!!!!

My plastics are already rockin the zipties quite nicely. Only reason im repairing plastics is because im painting them anyway why not fix em.
