this is basically the reason FI fails. it doesnt spread the impact out over the entire frame....similar to a slider.....where as the 3 point cages do.
Re: pics of FI cage damage
I just had the EXACT same thing happen to my 900RR using a very old F.I. cage design. I had both the left and right ears chuck completely out. The 900RR's are VERY susceptible to this type of damage, but the newer designed F.I. cages do a better job of preventing it. I'm lucky enough to live close to Tim Barnes and the F.I. shop, so I took the bike to him and he re-welded, drilled and tapped new ears on for me (at a very reasonable price).
F.I.'s newer designs are much better. I'm going to have Tim make a new cage for me, and I'm confident that I'll be OK.

Hey MXD--do you have any pics of your cage on a 929? I need to see the disance between your cage and the stator cover--Does your cage connect between the headers as well? All I want is a cage that stops busting my engine covers.
Re: pics of FI cage damage
here we go again.. hehe.. They may be good, but MXD cages make your bike look like a dune buggy.
I am not hating, they are just real big. Mike_3sick6 has one and it seems to work for him.

you wont break covers, we use a cross brace so they dont really bend too much. and no our cages dont connect between the headers, they go in front of them. and i dont have a pic of the 929 cage, but it looks exactly like the 600rr cage on our website. plus we are cheaper than everyone else.

and lb3 if you are worried about the looks of your bike, then we offer a track cage that holds up really well. must be the sleekest thing on the market. no need to weld your bike up, thats what the cage is for.
Re: pics of FI cage damage

that has to be a 125 wall for the dude that asked how thick the steel is.
just a heads up, its going to bend in on the front part. thats why the bar that connects them is there, to keep that section from bending in. its a real easy fix though, grab some 1" tube and weld it to one side of the cage. then on the other side of the cage, just drill a hole so you can connect the 1" tube to the other side of the cage. you will have to weld a nut to a washer and then weld the washer/nut to the 1" tube. hope this helps, nice cage though.
Re: pics of FI cage damage
the newer FI cages are much better than the older ones.
you should also make sure that those bolts are tight all the time...if i fall hard at all a couple times, i usually go back tighten 'em up. if they are tight, it will prevent more damage to the bike.
good luck, it is not the end of the world though...something WILL break eventually, the force of impact needs to go somewhere.
keep ridin her hard, she'll handle it!

werd...Mines brand new but I got an extra bar welded from the slider part down to the other bar. A triangle shape should be way stronger and distibute the impact better(Hopefully). btw, my rr already has the motor mount rewelded back in

still working on f2/f3 cages? site still says "coming soon"
i'm in the market for a cage, heard alot of good things about yours, but if it's not ready to go yet, i'll prolly end up with a 905.
Re: pics of FI cage damage
there will ALWAYS be a weak point in a cage, if its not your motor mount its your subframe, if its not that its a broken oil filter. If you reinforce, the force will go somewhere else and so on and so on. I would rather have a broken motor mount then a broken case, stator, flywheel, engine it self, you get my point.
Re: pics of FI cage damage
ahh-I'd personally rather break a stator cover than an engine mount--I think a motor mount is more of a serious job to fix.Cover, you just slap another one on. And always have an extra cover laying around too. JMO
Re: pics of FI cage damage
POWERS.......well dont go with them.........GAAAaaBAGE!!!!!! all these cages suck....they charge way too much...a cage should be no more than 100 dollas...all these new companies out there trying to get rich fast.......dumb asses......dont get powers or FI..........you spend 240 to 270 and end up paying for a cover anyway....
if you dump your bike the only thing saving it is you!!!!! lay under that ***** if you have to ....and never let go!!!!!! i had to learn that the HARD way!!!!!
