cutting exhaust pipe!?

Ok, I would need to cut the pipe on 636. I think I should first remove the upper plate and then cut it and then put the plate (don't know any better word to use) back on. How short can it be? What about a catalysator? Some other tips?

Thanks

UUMMM....I just removed the pipe, drilled out the rivets, took the cap off, took off bout 6 inches with the pipe cutter disc, drilled new holes for the rivets, and then put the cap back on...

it's for a friends 636. When my tail plastic was (on my ex 636) off I was first time past 12 and pipe scraped... I completly forgot about the pipe cuz it never scraped during 12. That costed me mag cover, left handlebar, plastics, right peg and few other stuff . So if your willing to write a check i'll give it a try...

Re: cutting exhaust pipe!?

no special way. there 4 steel tubes on the inside of a stock pipe that can be a bitch to cut through. if you have access to a chop saw its the easiest way. oh...take the end cap off first. its just easier that way. try not to bend it up to bad getting it out. if you have a sawzall its easy too, just take the end cap off, leave the pipe mounted and wack it off.

Some bikes don't even need to be cut. Are you doing it for looks or because you scrape that before bar/tail? Otherwise it's going to be loud as ****.

Re: cutting exhaust pipe!?

cutting and riveting is a cheap and fast way to get the job done, but will later fall apart.

I took my erion pipe to a welder and he cut 6 inches off and welded it back together. The cut and weld are covered by the clamp that holds the exhaust to the passenger peg. So you can't tell it has been cut. Nice and clean. Longer lasting

Re: cutting exhaust pipe!?

The pipe came riveted. What will fall apart? All the rivets aren't going to fall out at the same time. As far as cheap and easy perfect, and why would you put the weld in the middle?

Re: cutting exhaust pipe!?

whichever moron said to scrape it off in a 12 they are the wannabe stunter, any fool knows that that will cause your bike to corkscrew unless you have exhaust under the tail like a 600RR

Re: cutting exhaust pipe!?

happened to me, put it down easy on the pipe and tail and the bike turned, and if even a little turn with the real wheel making traction makes the bike shoot straight up into the air about 10 feet. wasnt pretty. i watched the video frame by frame and there are 3 frames where the bike went so high into the air that you couldnt even see it until it came back down to earth in a nosedive.. then again i was in 2nd gear.

Re: cutting exhaust pipe!?

how much does cutting the pipe affect the noise level? Does it keep the same tonality and just get louder or does it just get a lot louder?

636 acctually doesn't need to be cut just for 12, but my friend put a bar so close to subframe (no plastics or backlight) that pipe scraped when I tryed to park it. I never had any need to cut pipe on my 636. But it looks way better, 636 stock pipe is ugly...
