where to mount a stunt cage to?
where to mount a stunt cage to?
i'm goin home for the xmas break, i have some steel and a bender/welder at the house, thinking about messing around and building a cage for the bike. i have a 1994 F2.. not really sure what kind of design i want to imitate, i kinda like the F.I. cage, but they have a racing 905 cage out already.. hmm. but anyway, where should i be looking at on the bike for mounting points?

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
hey buddy! uhmm as for mounting points theres really no "front" engine mount on the F model cbrs. where my sliders are attached to my bike is close to a spot right below my knee. it requires cutting the plactics. im not sure about the F2's
edit: ill see if i cant find a few pic's for ya

i dont care about my plastics, they dont even fit that well anyway.
(aftermarket junk) i just wanna get a cage so if i drop it at least i dont crack an engine case or something. Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

you remember me man? from the dfw boards?
Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
Look at the pics of the racing 905 cage. They used all three of the points to mount their cages. I used the mount in front for my sliders because it was the easiest to get to and had plenty of room for a slider. Also it didn't need to be as long as the one on top. The mount to the back was in the way of my shins (i'm pretty tall) so i opted not to mount there. My plan is to make a copy of the fi cage, run the bar from that slider in front back to the about where the pegs are and then under and up the other side. To hold the bar back i'm going to us the bolt under the black round cover just the the left of the clutch case cover.
good luck, Jon

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
finally! someone who gets it.. so.. how are you gonna keep the bar from hitting your feet? also, i was wondering the same thing about the racing 905 cage, i'm also pretty tall and that back mounting point is where my knees are, or close to that. i also like the FI cage and want to imitate something like that. *another thought, so if you have the bar running across from where you have your slider, to by the pegs, it sounds like it'd go right over the clutch case cover.. are you planning to make it removeable?
Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
So as you see from this picture of my cbr I put the peg ($7 walmart bmx peg) right in that front motor mount. I'm gonna weld a large id pipe onto that peg (the red part). I will bend a single pipe the whole way around the bike, the od of the pipe will be small enough to fit into the red pipe. Then i will bolt the blue loop into the short red pipe. I will weld a small tab onto the blue pipe. To this I will bolt a flat piece of steel (green piece) that will go back to the swingarm bolt. This will be bent as clost to flush with the side of the bike as possible to keep it out of my way. Nothing should be in my way and it should do a decent job of protecting, atleast better than just the pegs like i have right now. And it will all be removable.
I hope this makes sense, i'm going to do this when i'm at home over christmas break, i'll post pics when i'm done. If you have anymore questions let me know.

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
hmm.. i dont think i would base my cage on a bmx peg. seems like it'd crack pretty easy on a hard hit? so basically the blue part is gonna be like a U? all one piece?
i'm building my cage next week, i've got plenty of steel so i'll figure something out. prolly do something similar to yours though.. the only thing that concerns me is that thats not really anything to hold the bar that goes under where it is.. with a hard hit it could bend in or whatever. seems like if there was another mounting point, it'd be sturdier.. hmmm.. how about a cross brace, like if you look where your kick stand swivels, like just to the left of that, have a bar that goes from side to side, like underneath the bike in between the headers and the motor. that way it wont just bend in.. but then again it might just shift the cage over to the other side.. hm

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
I friend based his gsxr cage off the bmx sliders and it has taken a ton of hits without any problems. I dropped mind from 12 and it took it fine. The peg is made of stainless steel and it is thick, it works as well as anything else. Another mounting point would probably make it sturdier but there really isn't much else to mount to on an f3. The other bolt is about your only choice and its pretty crowded and won't allow for a very large pipe. FI cages mount the same way with the same number of mounts so i figure its good enough. The only real point of the loop is to destribuite the shock and impact from that one bmx peg, in hopes of keeping the bolt from breaking. As long as you can get a good bolt like grade 10 it should be good. But whatever man i'm just telling you my plan come up with ur own design if you think u can do better.
Good luck
Good luck
Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
yeah.. thats true.. also, what about welding the peg to the mounting point? that way, its stronger and dont have to worry about the bolt breaking
Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
i kinda added onto your idea....
i mean if you got some extra metal why not add this for protection...
have the pink going under the headers and add a little cross brace to spread out impacts.
post up pictures when you make it! :YEAH
the photo might be a little small... wouldnt let me put anything over 100kb

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
thats not bad either.. i actually like that. its more weight, but more protection too.. i'd probably have the cross brace bars a little smaller so that the thing doesnt weigh a ton. lol.

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
Yeah no welding to the frame, bad idea. There is always going to be a weak point and i'd rather have the weak point be a bolt than part of the frame. Not sure what the od of the fi cages are but i know they use 1/8 steel walled tube.
Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
That extra loop would help spread the impact a bit but i'm not sure how much it would help, and the only point of the cross bracing would be to hold teh loops in place as it won't help distribute any impact. If you really want it to be stronger you could make it like this. For now i'm just gonna do my original FI copy though, if it breaks i'll try something else.
This would spread the impact between two mounting points, plus transfer it to the other side. You'd be using both the front and top mounting point that racing905 uses, both of which are motor mounts. If my FI copy fails this is what ill do next.

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
yeah. i like that last one you made, i thought about something like that too. i'd have to figure out a way to make it detachable, maybe put another bmx peg and weld the tube to the side of that. also another thought i had was to just weld the tubes to the sides of the bmx tubes, and then cut the U into two pieces and make flanges to connect them, like the Powers cage is. so that if you need to take off the cage, you can just unbolt the two bmx pegs and the U bar flange. also, that way you wouldnt have to take off the entire cage, just the side you need to work on.
Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?
hell, why not just use all three mounting points, and just use a flat angle iron for support, basically put the forward 3 mounting points of the 905 cage with the angle iron and wraparound tube of the F.I. sounds like best of both words to me! :YEAH
