Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

last 2... see, this is how we supported the bar, with the 2 flat pieces of steel connected to the bolt going through the centerstand mounts.. its really simple (but kinda ugly lol) we didnt really take our time, its not that important to make it look pretty cuz its not visible. i think it turned out pretty darn well for 2-3 days of work and alot of screwing around. hahaha. opinions??

Beautiful! I like your idea of mounting to the centerstand spot. I think its a more solid mount than the swingarm bolt, plus it looks alot cleaner. On top of that it gives a purpose to the centerstand mount! I'll be starting on mine tomorrow. And it will probably look alot like yours!

Nice job, Jon

you CAN weld stainless, aluminum, pretty much ANY metal with a mig.

for stainless you need to use stainless wire and diferent gas (i think its 75%argon 25% co2) than standard steel. for aluminum you need to get a spool gun and argon(i think).

are you using one of those shitty welders from home depot or something? you need a miller or lincoln or something like that in order to weld right. i weld stainless and steel together all the time and it holds up like a champ. and chromoly uses the same welding material as steel, but ive only been told that by some welders, havent done it myself yet.

So how did u bend the pipe with just a blow torch? Did ya just stick it in a vice and heat up the spots u needed to bend? The bends on the bottom are pretty sharp, how did you keep from kinking the pipe? I went and bought all my parts today but i'm just trying to figure out the exact shape and bends with a thin steel rod.

basically thats what i did.. if its not something that you do all the time, it probably wont be as easy for you as it was for me. after testing out this design more, i really like it and my partner and i decided to go ahead and patent it, so its now patent pending. :YEAH we're gonna sell em for 200 bucks a pop. this isnt the type of work we normally do (normally do metal fabrication, building stair rails and stuff like that) but i like it, and my partner enjoys it too so we decided that we'll start building cages and 12 bars. for now we're just gonna build cages for the f2/f3, we're working on building a cage for an f4i soon.

now why the fu(k hasnt anyone else thought of mounting them there??? you might just have a winner guys, let me know how those tabs for the center stand hold up. only thing i can think of is that you might have to re-enforce those a little but **** ill buy one if you crash test it and they work!!!

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

this thing holds up EXTREMELY well. i was wondering that myself, thats why we went ahead and sent in for a patent so that we can have the rights to it, also, if anyone else wants a cage for a different bike, just pm me and i will cut you a deal on your bike cage so that we can start making them for different styles. we're stoked about it, and hoping to make a website and will have a company name soon.

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

hmmm guess i should have made a patent since thats basically my design for the f3. Does FI have their cages patented cause in all honesty its a damn clost copy of an FI cage. I'll give the torch and bar a shot. A new piece of steel pipe is only like $6 anyways.

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

nope its not the FI cage, and yes they have a patent on their design. however, the way that they brace their cage is totally different, i am the only one who built (and patented) a cage using the centerstand mounts to brace the bar.

the only reason i'm patenting this is to protect the design in case some big company comes by and tries to mass produce what my partner and i thought of.

just remember to use chrome molly tubing. rolled steel and black steel are to rigid. trust me i made about 3 cages b4 i figured that out. i have an FI now, i had a 905 on my 900rr. both very good cages, both chrome molly tubing

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

that is what we are going to be building the cages out of, we just made the prototype out of rolled steel to see how it looked/held up. i'm curious though, how did yours break? i have tried to break the cage, but i havent succeeded yet... i'm sure if i crashed going at a very fast speed or had a very violent highside, etc, it would break, but so would the entire bike.

Why is rigid steel not good? Don't you want it to be rigid and not bend?

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

yard sail a 12 and test it that way. im not shure exactly why chrome molly is better. all i know is that rolled steel has no give and you have a better chance of snapping something off the bike. you would rather have the cage give over breaking off a motor mount or your frame. if anyone knows the exact reasoning behind using chrome molly over rolled steel please enlighten us.

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

well i know that chrome moly is lighter and alot stronger then rolled steel. that is what they use to build Nascar roll cages, very strong and lightweight but pricey. the way i built my cage, the bolt should snap off long before a motor mount or the frame breaks. i'm not good enough to be 12'ing anything, i'm just now starting to try slower stuff. the only problem is that right now the bike is all i have, and really crashing it hard would probably take out rearsets/clipons, etc. a cage isnt going to protect any of that. however, i do build extreme offroading rollcages and bumpers on the side, so i have a pretty good idea of what does, and doesnt hold up. you havent met a person who has a destructive personality until you've met an extreme offroader.

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

lol funny guys. no, as i told Spencer (foofighter) if i dont already have a cage built for your style bike, if you are willing to let me borrow the bike for 3 days at the most at my shop in Longview, i will take half off the price, so 100 bucks for a chrome moly cage. just email me if you're interested. BTW, longview is about 2 hours east of Dallas for your info.

Re: where to mount a stunt cage to?

well, the cage is crash tested now, lost it coming down from a wheelie, now typing with one hand as my left is broken. got a bit of road rash but nothing serious. the cage held up excellent, no damage to bike other then scratched rear section. pics will be up in a couple days.
