Wheelie Questions

(have read the beginners guide to wheelies a million times)
Cliff notes:
Is it ridiculous to learn wheelies on a 1000?

Full story:
Had a 600 for a couple of years, tried to learn but my clutch ups were not normally that high, or consistent. First felt so twitchy and came up so fast, so I was trying 2nd gear sitdowns. Never got around to being ballsy enough for them to be high and consistent though. Tried staggered standups but used power instead of clutching so it wouldn't stay up. Never got around to fully gearing up and trying some slow, clutch and standup

Got in a wreck (not from wheeling) and got out for a couple of years. This season bought an 06 gsxr 1000. Is it crazy to learn on this bike? Thing is nuts, clutched it in 3rd relatively low speed, **** comes right up. I'm actually nervous about clutching in any gear lower lol. Should I just sell and get an f4i or 636 like everyone else? Sucks because that would be a huge hassle and I love the bike on the street, but of course I've got this itch now to learn wheelies and eventually stunting if I like it.

So when I'm attempting to learn. Follow the sticky right? Around 15mph, first gear, staggered, clutch up? What's the lowest rpm that I can clutch at and still learn proper technique? Would like to be going as slow as possible.

Re: Wheelie Questions

you can clutch pretty much any bike from a dead stop with stock gearing. as for learning on that bike, well i guess it depends on how serious you plan on getting. if u just wanna kill the streets then keep it. if you plan on getting serious and doing alot of parking lot riding then id prob get rid of it and get something thats alot cheaper and less intense on the power. its up to you. anything can be done, lots of ppl started out on 1000's, just everyone jumps on the bandwagon now and gets an f4i to learn on. i learned on a gsxr 750.

Re: Wheelie Questions

You say it was hard to get up your old 600, and that the 1000 comes up with easy. It is just that you were not timing it right. I can bring up my little 125 dirt bike with no clutch in almost any gear, you just have to learn how to pull the bike at the right time, lol my 125 has like 5 horse, lol well you know what i mean, you dont need a 1000 to learn on unless you are doing power wheelies, if you are trying to learn bp wheelies then you can do that with little to no power at all, haha long story (sorry)

I see your point, I'll just go out there and try some stuff really slow. Does turning the idle up help bogginess even with both wheels on the ground? I was standing staggered the other day and the bike for very boggy anything under like 20mph.

Yeah dude I know exactly what you mean, you don't need any kind of power to wheelie. I didn't buy the 1000 to wheelie, wasn't even thinking about it when I bought it. Just that when I started riding again, of course I got the urge to learn how to wheelie again. I wish I had gotten a smaller 600 with a more forgiving throttle response because I'm being a real ***** with this 1k throttle. You're right my timing was off with the 600 too, just wasn't going all out either. Didn't occur to me to try very slow standups to learn like in the guide either though. I know now, slow is the way to go, hitting the pavement hard and fast blows lol.
