I need help with slo stuff

Alright im getn bored with the fast wheelies and piddly bull $hit. I can ride standups and sit downs in BP pretty good (i can ride em out 1/4 to 1/2 mile on avg). and tank wheelies in 1st gear ok. but i want to slo that **** down now. my sprockets are stock. so my question is what should i get for sprockets. maybe -1 +5 or 6 to start out or jump up to +12 or something? or do bigger sprockets not really matter that much and im just being a ***** and not using the rear brake enuff to get to a slower speed. somebody let me what to do plz. This is on and 01 R1 with a cage and dented tank.

If your only riding your wheelies out 1/4to1/2 mile you are not even in the balance point. You should be able to carry it out at least a mile at a steady speed. Also I don't know what gear your in but if you want to do slow stuff use first gear. And to slow the bike down you need to come beyond the balance point then start working the back brake.I wouldn't get any sprockets for now it will just make it harder to learn.Just practice trying to carry the wheelie further and further till you can hold it at a steady speed for a good distance, then try bringing it back a little further and pressing the back brake.Just learn little by little and you will get it without hurting yourself. Also practicing in first gear is safer because if you feel like your going over and you let off the gas the engine braking will bring you back down most of the time, but always try to cover the back brake.

Re: I need help with slo stuff

yup exactly that. I used to ride em on the freeway 60mph-70mph and I used to do 1/4 mile or even 1/2 mile and I thought that was bp, its not. BP is when u can carry them as long as u want and u dont hear the rpm's climbing anymore. Now Im just trying to reach bp doing slow wheelies, just seems so much harder to me for some reason, guess cuz Im too choppy on the throttle.

:YEAH once u get slow wheelies down highway wheelies r a joke, i pick up highway wheelies at 65 and set them down around 45 or 50 sometimes just to make a game out of it

Re: I need help with slo stuff

I started on -1, +2 on my cbr6 and it worked fine. (Depends on how slow u really want to go)
the gearing will allow you to travel at slower speeds but with more revs (compared to stock gearing) so you are les likely to stall.
personal choice but: no need to turn up any idle - just be smooth on the throttle.

keep practicing trying to slow it down on the back brake behind BP in 1st gear. You are more likely to learn where the BP is quicker if you try and slow it down rather than having BP itself as your goal.

good luck

Re: I need help with slo stuff

I learned rear brake control and slow stuff at the same time. I just turned up the idle, clutched it past the bp, slammed on the rear brake, and did that over and over again untill I was comfortable feathering the rear brake. Over time it becomes easier untill you dont think about it. This was after I had learned bp highway stuff using only the throttle. You can do it this way but I wouldnt suggest it. I had a bunch of good hard falls.

Re: I need help with slo stuff

thanks fellas for all the tips. glad to see people actually want to help on here. most of the threads i read someone usually starts bashin the newbie. so im goin take all the advice and see if i cant get em slower and farther. and practice practice parctice. seems like a lot of people (in past threads) say the R1s are hard to learn slo stuff on. seeing how this is my first and only bike maybe learnin on a difficult bike will benifit me in the end.

**** you think R1's are hard, try a freakin 600rr. Yup practicing is the key. Im still working on em, seems like everytime I go out there Im noticing something new that makes me more comfortable.

I know what you mean. my buddy has an 03 600rr. that bike is all about first gear. if im in second gear tryin to do a standup i really have to bounce it and clutch the **** out of it. but i think there was a huge power decrease with the 03s vs. the 04-06s. people complained bout the 03s not havin enuff power. so then honda redesigned the engines for the 04s and up. i know guys with 06 gixxer 6s and they can clutch up a stand up in third.

Re: I need help with slo stuff

well no I mean its hard because of the high balance point. THe bike has plenty power. I went -1/+2 on mine and I can clutch it up in 2nd and 3rd no problem. I can even bounce it up in 3rd gear on the freeway. The problem is getting used to the high bp. Other than that, its a great bike, handles like a champ and has plenty of power for being a 600.

That's pretty much how i learned too. Took a break and bought a fiddy. Rode that for like 3 weeks here and there and just that helped alot cause all you have with the fiddy is the back break. NO engine braking at all. So it's the brake or you *** hitting the ground..or chasing the bike. I couldn't believe how much just that little time on the fiddy helped.
