EDIT: I took newbie to mean newbie to riding, but I see you already have a gix1k...if you've got brake control and are looking to get it REAL slow than go with some gearing

thats a myth i had a -6 front on my gixxer for 2 years stock chain. thats right a -6 11teeth sold the bike still rocking it with the stock chain. the key word here is LUBE and the lack there of that makes your chain go bad.

I've got stock gearing on a 98 blade, was thinking of going +4 to 6 on the rear. Will it make much difference?
I'm doing ok atm but want to be able to do it slower.

I'm +5 on my 99 blade, but only because I like to murder streets

it's enough to let me rip up 3rd gear every time. but I've been concentrating almost exclusively on slow stuff lately and looking I'm looking for a -1 front sprocket (520, if anyone has one PM me) my wheels pretty far forward in my swingarm so I should be able to keep the same chain. going +5 was definately noticable but not too significant. you gotta shift through the gears a little faster, 1st jumps up and 3rd comes up gravy, but if you don't have any interest in highway I'd say look more towards +7-8. I didn't want to make too big of a leap when I went +5 cause it does make the throttle more twitchy, but if you've got rear brake skills and good throttle control don't be afraid to go +8 or even +10 or you might end up wanting to drop a tooth up front like I am now... if you like the highway though, +5 is where it's at.

Re: new 636 and learning slow stuff
that should be a good setup but if it's a lot only bike you could probably do with more gearing, but then again you don't really need it...and if you plan to use it on the streets also -1+6 would be about as much as you'd wanna go
Re: new 636 and learning slow stuff
Thanks, I do plan to use it on the streets (acctually the better word would be using it), and am thinking as you said not to go over that, especially cuz I don't think it's necessary...
Re: new 636 and learning slow stuff
ok thanks guys. stuntlife is probably the best thing in the world for a stunter. this has been very informative... i was thinking monstar sprocket in the begginging just to learn , but i like murdering the streets alot but id like to learn slow stuff then be able to do it in intersections and at traffic lights..... im still in a toss up ,,,, im leaning towards the 10+ bc ive gotten really good on my 50 with break control and alot of people say thats key! So with 50 break control down pat , 10+ in the rear , i should be able to not kill my self,,,, im 3+ on my gsxr 1000 03 , and i turn the idle up to about 4500 rpm but its not enough and its just choppy with the throttle ,so im hoping the 636 will be amazing
Re: new 636 and learning slow stuff
if +3 on 1000 is choppy with idle that high, the 636 with +10 will be even more choppy. Learn stock gearing with no idle first, that way you'll get throttle control cuz choppy throttle control (no matter how good you do with RB) leads to bad left-right balancing and out of control wheelies, you will thank me later...
