Need help mastering the rear brake

While attempting a wheelie I have a bad habit of letting off the throttle to bring the front end down instead of the rear brake. So far it hasn't caused a problem, but I'm afraid that one day I'll bring the bike too far back and engine braking won't be enough. What are some good techniques to train my brain to hit the rear brake instead of letting off the throttle?

Thanks

I would love to get a fiddy but I don't have the extra cash to get one. I don't go out and try to stunt every day. I just like to pull the occasional wheelie and am trying to find a way to improve my skills.

Re: Need help mastering the rear brake

The way I learned (on my fiddy at least..) I would bring a wheelie up to balance point, cover the rear brake, then bring it back past balance point and slam the rear brake to bring it down..

I kept doing that tell I could bring it way past balance point and slow it down to a stop

Re: Need help mastering the rear brake

that is a really good write up. i was looking for that. i seen it before and wanted it to refer back to. i dug through that learning 12s sticky for this. and that thread is way of topic and the first 10 pages is bar talk. it was right there the whole time and i never went to it cuz i didnt think it was about 12s or slow wheelies. they should rename that sticky or put that post in the first page of the other learn 12 sticky. or maybee i need to open my eyes. but anyways im learning and that is very well written and clear w/o all the digging through threads.

Re: Need help mastering the rear brake

just go out and practice 1st gear wheelies and put it in your head that you have to bring it down w/ the brake even if you arent past bp tap the brake to get used to coming down that way. Alot of ppl learned by applying a little pressure to the brake as soon as they bring it up. Either way its all in your head once you get it down it will be 2nd nature. Practice is the only way.

50's brake control is just like a big bike.. It gets you the re-flex to hit the brake instead of bail.

If you ride a fiddy and jump off everytime you come back, chances are you'l hop on a big bike and try to jump off when you come back..

And what you mean your not using idle? You can do idle tricks on a fiddy also
