not unless it's stolen. The 1911 was retired from the army for the beretta PT92 "m9". The 1911 also is the same thing as the civilian edition so there is no restrictions on civilians having them.

Some of the big boys that shoot around here have old military weapons. 50 cals and stuff. They were legally obtained and they have their Class III license do carry automatic weapons so it's all good.

Thanks man I appreciate the feedback...It was given to my dad from his best friend whose father was an officer in the Korean War, it was his pistol and now it's been passed down...I've been wanting to rebuild it and put a full length guide rod in it I just didn't know if it was legit for me to own

if you alter it then it will lose value....just think about that.

If you want to shoot, i recommend buying a different 1911. They aren't that expensive.

+1 take it to a smith is it isnt functioning, if it does work leave it as authentic as possible. It might be worth something when it time for you to retire.

Don't mess with that gun. Keep it original. My RIA 1911 was only $350.

i have my 2 1911's they were my great grandfathers (he too was an officer), they are in a oak case with velvet inside, **** looks gansta. ive only cleaned them once other than that they remain untouched. id imagine they both work a 1911 is a pretty solid/reliable gun which is why the military chose them.

i want to buy a 1911 and convert it dillinger style.

Yeah most deffenetly don't alter it. 1911 with old history like that will always be worth more later down the line.
