One of my coworkers informed me that i had a flat tire this morning. So after lunch I went out to change it, i have a jack and a full size spare so its no big deal. Except for the wind. As with most office buildings, mine is in the middle of a large field, and its windy all teh time. Today being the coldest day of the year, I quickly whipped up a wind shelter out of cardboard boxes. That worked well. Next step: chock the front wheel so it doesnt roll away when i jack it up. I was too lazy to walk back inside and find stuff to use for wheel chocks, so I just put it into 4wd instead. I get out the little oem worm drive jack and start turning, and turning, and turning. As im lifting the new wheel up, the asphalt underneath the jack disintegrates, the jeep rolls forward off the jack. I scream a bunch of curses as loud as I can, then look inside to find that the transfercase didnt go all the way to 4lo, and stopped in 4n instead. And of course being in a rush, i wasnt smart enough to double check.
Damages:
1. shock absorber is fucked from the tire hitting it. The shock is 10 yrs and 197k miles old so it probably doesnt do anything anymore anyway. Going in the garbage tonight.
2. Rear bumper cover bent up and in. It was already in shitty condition, as long as its not gonna rip off on the highway i dont really care.
3. brake rotor shield - well it did its job and protected the rotor. I bent it back into shape with a rock and a stick, its as good as new.
4. My pride - took the biggest hit. I cant believe i did somethign that dumb.
5. Tire - found the nail already, its in the middle of a big tread block so it'll be an easy plug.
