Re: Semi work safe
That's not dry rot, that is the adhesive. Look at the new seal. There is a red adhesive on it. Use brake cleaner. Don't repack them, just get some diff fluid on them. The Fords don't have sealed bearings o you don't use grease. They are fed with diff fluid from the axle housing so you don't want to clog up that system with grease. Just put some diff fluid on them so they don't run dry before the diff fluid from the axle housing gets up to them.
Re: Semi work safe
There fine. The diff fluid will just mix with the grease.
Re: Semi work safe

my dumbass packed grease in the hub bearings too - hopefully doesn't cause anything to sieze ... i know mixing lubricants is not good ...
left side will be preventative maintenance after i get back from indy ... did put a 08 rear diff cover on ... looks nice
Re: Semi work safe
jobs like that are much easier with 2 people ... especially when one has done it ... I feel I could service the other side bearings/hub in the rear in 2 hours now that I know what I'm doing ....
Re: Semi work safe
If I had to do it again I would pay the macine shop by my house to swap out the ball joints, u-joints, and press in the axle seal.
